Here Comes the Sun: SM Prime’s Solar Power Revolution

Imagine a world powered by the sun, where clean energy fuels daily life and helps combat climate change. In the Philippines, where sunlight graces the country for roughly 4,440 hours a year, that vision is well within reach—and SM Prime is leading the charge.

SM City Cabanatuan

Solar Power Takes Center Stage

In 2014, SM North EDSA made history as the first commercial property in the Philippines to install solar photovoltaic (PV) panels on its roof. At the time, it was the largest installation in Southeast Asia, marking the start of SM Prime’s bold commitment to renewable energy.

Fast forward to today, and SM Supermalls operates 44 malls powered by solar PV systems, generating a whopping 51.6 megawatts (MW) of clean energy. That’s enough to power thousands of homes—or remove thousands of cars from the road.

The crown jewel of SM’s solar empire is SM City Santa Rosa, part of a portfolio of 96,000 solar panels spread across Luzon and Visayas. Covering 33 hectares, SM Prime now boasts the Philippines’ largest solar energy portfolio, a cornerstone of its Net Zero by 2040 strategy.

More Than Just Savings

“SM’s environmental sustainability began with energy and water conservation,” says SM Supermalls President Steven Tan. “Revolutionizing our malls’ energy efficiency through renewable sources magnifies our responsibility to serving people and the planet.”

This commitment isn’t just about cutting costs. The 51.6 MW capacity slashes carbon emissions, reducing the need for coal and easing the strain on the national power grid. It’s a win-win-win: less pollution, a more stable energy supply, and a cleaner environment for local communities.

Solar Power in Action

What does this mean on the ground—or, in this case, on the roof? Solar energy directly powers mall essentials like lighting, escalators, and air conditioning, reducing dependency on traditional energy sources. During peak hours, solar power helps keep the lights on and the crowds comfortable, all while protecting the planet.

Beyond the Sun

But SM Prime isn’t stopping at solar. The company is rolling out a suite of sustainability initiatives, from waste management and water conservation to air quality improvements. Together, these efforts form a comprehensive strategy to reduce environmental impact and inspire others to follow suit.

A Brighter Tomorrow

SM Prime’s journey into solar energy is more than just a corporate milestone—it’s a beacon of hope for a country grappling with climate change. By investing in renewable energy and championing sustainability, SM Prime is lighting the way to a greener, cleaner, and brighter future.

The sun is shining, and SM Prime is making the most of it. Who’s ready to follow suit?
