Building Sustainable Cities: SM Prime’s Vision for the Future of Urban Life

What makes a city thrive? It’s not just about buildings and infrastructure. It’s about creating spaces where movement, synergy, and prosperity blend seamlessly. At the heart of it all? A vibrant community.

“At SM Prime, we dream big. Real prosperity goes beyond financial success—it’s about building sustainable, inclusive communities that last for generations,” said Jessica Bianca Sy, Lead Executive for Design, Innovation, and Strategy for SM Prime Holdings Inc. (SMPHI) and SM Development Corporation (SMDC). Sy is among the notable speakers at the 7th Annual Conference of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities – Sustainable Cities and Landscapes Conference and Student Symposium 2024 (APRU-SCL 2024), joining an elite group of climate specialists, local and international professors, and government leaders.

The 7th Annual Association of Pacific Rim Universities – Sustainable Cities and Landscapes Conference and Student Symposium 2024 (APRU-SCL 2024) Conference on Advancing Sustainable Cities and Communities through Science, Technology, and Innovations is hosted and organized this year by the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB).

This year’s three-day event, themed "Advancing Sustainable Cities and Communities through Science, Technology, and Innovation", shines a spotlight on how sustainability is shaping the cities of tomorrow.

As one of Asia’s leading integrated property developers, SM Prime has long been a leader in sustainability and disaster resilience. In a country like the Philippines, where climate vulnerabilities are all too real, the company is taking action by embedding disaster preparedness and resilience in its urban developments. SM Prime’s vision? Scale these efforts up to entire cities.

With the rapid growth of cities comes a surge in energy demand. To meet this, SM Prime is partnering with key players to implement efficient renewable energy solutions and systematically transition towards net-zero emissions.

Looking ahead, Sy emphasized that SM Prime’s future master-planned developments will focus on a holistic approach to utility infrastructure, embedding sustainability into every level of urban design. "We're developing a living framework with our knowledge partners, targeting six key areas: transport, energy, water, biodiversity, built form, and materials,” Sy explained.

With this bold vision, SM Prime is not just building structures—they're shaping the future. “This is what the future of cities in the Philippines looks like, and we’re dedicated to delivering it for generations to come,” Sy added.

SM Prime continues to be a catalyst for economic growth and urban innovation, pushing the boundaries of integrated property development and delivering lifestyle cities that enrich lives.

The 7th APRU-SCL 2024 is hosted by the University of the Philippines Los Baños, taking place at the SMX Aura Convention Center from August 6-8, 2024. For more details, visit dcerp.che.uplb.edu.ph/ichspd or contact hspdconf@up.edu.ph

SM City Baguio: Rainwater Treatment Done Right, Water Sustainability in Sight

SM City Baguio is making significant strides in water stewardship with its innovative rainwater treatment facility (RTF), launched in July 2023. In the months since, the facility has already processed over 17,111.80 cubic meters of rainwater – equivalent to 7 Olympic-size swimming pools, or enough to fill over 6,800 standard water tankers – into potable water for the SM mall’s operations and for their lessees’ use.  SM City Baguio's groundbreaking rainwater treatment facility has treated over 17,000 cubic meters of rainwater into drinkable water. This initiative supplements the mall's water supply from the Baguio Water District and significantly contributes to the city's water security and the safety of its residents. Located at the mall’s basement level, the RTF provides 30% of the mall’s total monthly average requirement for clean water that is safe for consumption and food preparation.       "There is a critical need for reliable and safe water sources," said B
