Open Letter for the best Lola

Dear Nene,
I’ve been writing since I know to read and write and wrote a thousand words to inspire others but,I haven’t write a single letter to you. I know this is too late but better late than never.
You celebrate your 78th birthday last September 15, 2019 and I forget to greet even you tried to call via messenger. Sorry for that I was caught-up with my writing and my sense of time is not good.
You are my mom, aunt, best-friend and a wonderful “Lola” to my kids and sister’s kids. You treat them as your own. The care you gave is always over the top and we really appreciate it.
I never say “I love you to you” because, I’m not use to it. I fought with you in many ways and act as a ‘brat’ or ungrateful but in my heart you are always my only mom.
I grow up believing you as my mom. Even I saw my real mom around, I consider her my Aunt (sorry nanay Delfa). In every achievements or mistake I made both you and Tiyoy Munding (your husband) supported and cheers for me.
When I got my own family, you live with us and raise my kids. I can travel and go around leaving my kids without worries. You are my reliable right hand willing to help and assist in everything we need.
You always smile when you are with Kurt and Karl
As a grandmother, you are the ‘Best among the rest!’ I know you have a “paborito apo” (Karl) but you still try to show your equal love to the boys. Kurt will sometime complains that you did not eat your pizza and cake slice but secretly give it to Karl.Sometimes, George and I were jealous because Karl will always bring a take-out food for you when we dine out, or he will tell his dad to buy something for you when we do our shopping. My kids love you so much and always keep on talking about you.
For them, you are not just a “Lola” but a parent that shows unconditional love, that they will treasure forever. You teach them more than us.
Birthday dinner for you last year (2018)
Even our pets, Walle (dog) and Misty (cat) love you more. Walle will not listened to us but when he hear you voice, he will go to you and do his loving gesture. While misty always cuddle with you. One time when go for vacation, she hide under the stairs and won’t come out and she keep on looking for your voice and when you call, Kurt put on the speaker phone on her ears, and that was the time she came out.
Walle
Every corner of our home has your touch. I’m an introvert and does not know our neighbors but you are the friendly one. Everyone in the village almost knows you. The guard and the cleaning aids keep looking and asking when you will be back.
Misty

As of now Kurt has been our
reliable cook and house manager and Karl will always complain “Para kang si Lola Nene”. Yes, he imitates you. From your nagging and waking up early to prepare our breakfast.
We miss you a lot! I’m telling Karl that you have a new favorite ‘Apo’ that’s why, you won’t came back, but I was surprised on his response.
“Lola Nene is always my lola, wherever she go, I love her and when she love someone I know that I’m always her number one,” he told me.
Hope, you will be back with us. Now that, I’m going to be away soon, I’m leaving my kids to your care again. You may be going to be 80 years old and experiencing some memory problems but your heart will always remember me and my kids.
I can assure you that I love you. I can ensure you that the kids deeply missed you. I can ensure you that I will treasure the memories I have of you in my heart forever. I can ensure you that I couldn’t be more proud, honored, and thankful to be your daughter.I’ am praying that you will always stay healthy and strong and be with us as long as you live. Thank you for everything.
From your daughter,
Cheryl
On the note...
Our grandparents have a particularly strong influence on us which is why we also develop a strong sense of “utang na loob” or debt of gratitude which motivates us to give them back the love and care that we receive.

Ensure Gold’s “May Pinagmanahan” video recently released in their series “Stories of Strength”, tells the story of a child’s playtime with his two competitive lolos, and the strength needed to keep up with an energetic child.

It also presented how caregivers or the adult children could give back the much-needed gift of strength to their ageing loved ones. This is so lolos and lolas are not only able to remain active but also continue being able to make memories with their children and grandchildren.
