A perfect place for book lovers

Putting together two of your favorite past times, reading and enjoying a cup of coffee, in just one place, newly-opened Book and Borders Cafe is set to become one of the metro’s more popular hangouts.

Brand ambassadors Karylle and Benjamin Alves
during the ribbon cutting ceremony

Charming and inviting, Book and Borders is the latest themed café to open in Quezon City, catering to customers who have an appreciation for good books and equally good food and coffee.

Located at 281 Tomas Morato, Quezon City, Book and Borders, unlike other crowded cafes where people are more engaged in chit chat, has purposely turned their space into something that is more relaxed and quiet.

This is because the café encourages customers to go through their extensive selection of books, and take their time to hangout or read. In fact, the café also makes book stands available for its customers, to make reading their chosen book, much easier.

Complementing the nice ambiance and the library aspect of the café are delicious light fare and refreshing drinks.

Aside from delicious muffins, breads, cupcakes, pies, tarts, squares, doughnuts, and cakes (Salted Caramel Chocolate Cake), Book and Borders also serves more filling menu options like pasta (Truffle Mushroom Pasta, Tuyo Pasta), sandwiches (Beef Pastrami Panini), even salad and breakfast options. For drinks, there’s coffee of course, in a variety of options, as well as refreshing smoothies for hot days.

The café’s brand ambassadors, Karylle and Benjamin Alves are both book lovers, and represents what the café wants to promote very well; which is to encourage the habit of reading as well as indulging in one’s love for coffee. The two self-confessed book lovers were present at the café’s grand opening last July 28, wherein guests were treated to the café’s bestsellers and were given the chance to enjoy the selection of books that are available.

Carrying the tagline, Read. Sip. Dine. Book & Borders is definitely a must-try not just for book lovers and coffee lovers but anyone who is looking for a nice place to hang out in the busy metro.

Latest Innovation From Healthway

99% of Filipinos suffer from food intolerance
Healthway Medical introduces FIT, a test to detect food intolerance

Reactions to certain foods are quite common.  However, some reactions go unnoticed until certain abnormal manifestations occur – internally (physiological) or externally (physical, i.e. on skin).Where food ALLERGY has almost an immediate reaction, food INTOLERANCE, on the other hand, does not immediately manifest. Sometimes, it takes as much several months or as short as days for symptoms to be obvious.

According to Nutrition and Lifestyle Counselor Ginny Sinense-Marksl, RND, food intolerance often occurs in people who eat normal or even very common food substance (rice, egg, dairy, wheat) that they are highly sensitive to. These foods cause inflammations in their body that could manifest as allergy-like reactions such as diarrhea, bloating, stomach cramps and at times, skin rashes that almost never seem to subside. Also, it could be one of the major reasons why it is difficult to manage any weight problem.

Food intolerance may involve some or all the same symptoms as food allergies. “While food allergies are acute reactions to a particular food substance and can cause life-threatening symptoms, food intolerance is chronic and less severe but, nevertheless aggravating to optimum health,” said Marksl.

A number of reactions surface when a person is found to be intolerant on a specific food item. However, some people could still eat small amounts of food they are “intolerant” to without any immediate physiological or physical reaction.
Though minimum to no immediate reaction occurs, chronic exposure to a food substance a person is intolerant to can be potentially hazardous to health due to constant presence of inflammation in the body as Marksl further explained.
Food Intolerance is a type III food item that occurs when the body produces Immunoglobulin (IgG) as a reaction to allergenic food.
Immunoglobulin are a class of proteins that function as antibodies produced by the immune system in response to foreign bodies that enter the body. Various studies reveal that if food with high IgG levels are eliminated from the diet, symptoms can be reduced.
“Not knowing where you’re intolerant to could lead to chronic diseases such as abdominal bloating and fluid retention, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, migraine, and asthma,” said Carmie De Leon, vice president for sales and marketing of Healthway Medical. “This makes a Food Intolerance Test all the more important.”

Healthway Medical, the most trusted and preferred mall-based clinics in the Philippines, recommends every children and adult alike to undergo a Food Intolerance Test (FIT) or Food Print Test to identify which food groups are safe to eat.

FIT is the most advanced and comprehensive laboratory service that detects the presence of igG-food specific antibodies to a wide range of food people consume every day.

Healthway’s FIT is inclusive of a consultation with nutritionist to guide you through the FIT service and to explain the findings of the test.

“Not having your test now can be potentially dangerous since some people have high IgG levels but do not experience the symptoms,” De Leon said. “There are others who even feel better short after they eat food at which they are intolerant to, but continuing to take these food groups may re-grow the symptoms to much worse cases. Still, once symptoms occur, it is recommended to avoid all other members of that food group unless tested negatively.”

De Leon concluded, “Early detection of food intolerance will go a long way in ensuring one’s optimum health. If you want to achieve a quality life, make sure to add sleep, right food intake, exercise, and de-stressing as part of your daily routine. When you start living a healthy life, everything else will follow.”

If you think you have the symptoms of food intolerance, visit Healthway Medical Clinics at the Alabang Town Center, Edsa Shangri-la, Market! Market!, Festival Mall, Healthway Manila, SM The Block and Greenbelt 5.

6M kids to benefit from MILO, DepEd Project

Nestlé Philippines, in collaboration with the Department of Education (DepEd), has launched the MILO Champ Moves, a nationwide school-based program that aims to encourage six (6) million elementary children in 10,000 schools to live an active and healthy lifestyle.

Champ Moves during it's launch at Highway
Hills Integrated School, Brgy. Highway Hills
Mandaluyong City.

Designed by fitness experts from the DepEd, the MILO Champ Moves program seeks to foster among Filipino school children aged 7-12 years old the importance of physical activities and good nutrition as part of an active and healthy lifestyle. From July until year-end, the program will teach students a three-minute exercise emulating sports movements, which they will do every morning in school, after the Flag Ceremony, to energize their body and alert their minds for the school day ahead.

Champ Moves will also equip teachers with nutrition modules that highlight, among others, the importance of a healthy breakfast to help fuel school children’s performance in school and in doing physical activities.

Department of Education Assistant Secretary for Legal and Legislative Affairs Atty. Tonisito Umali said the DepEd is very proud and excited about this partnership. “We believe that children should engage in regular physical exercise so they can stay fit and healthy. We are thankful that we have partners like MILO to help us in this mission. Together, we will give the students a better chance to practice a more active and healthier lifestyle.”

In line with MILO’s mission to nourish champions every day, the MILO Champ Moves encourages school children to learn how to play like a Champ and think like a Champ.

“Through this program, we aim to reach out to more schools and students, enabling them to start living an active and healthy lifestyle whether on or off the court. By adding an element of fun through these sports-themed dance steps, we aim for students to see Champ Moves as something to look forward to. Our continued partnership with the Department of Education demonstrates our commitment to provide nutritional education and exercise to children across the country,” said Sherilla Bayona, Business Executive Manager of Nestlé Philippines.

The Champ Moves program is under the One Child, One Sport (OCOS) campaign, which was launched by MILO last year in collaboration with the DepEd to encourage school children to engage in more physical activities.

Nestlé Philippines Chairman and CEO Suresh Narayanan said the MILO Champ Moves program seeks to excite, engage and inspire both the youth and educators through sports and proper nutrition. “We hope that, through this MILO advocacy, we shall be able to continue to make a difference in the lives of our Filipino school children, who are the country’s hope for the future,” Mr. Narayanan said.

My Dad the Joker

By Kurt Reed Luis True

A lot of people say I'm like my Dad. I don't look like him, of course, but we share a lot of things in common. One of them is humor.
Me and my dad having a good time.

My Dad is a humorous person. He loves jokes and he always sees a funny side in almost everything. He probably inherited that from his late father and got his sense of humor from reading and collecting Mad and other humor magazines and books.

The people who don't know Dad misunderstand him for being funny. They think Dad is rude for cracking jokes or making humorous side comments. The truth is, it's his way of connecting with people. Everyone loves a clown and Dad's funny side often endears him to others and shows that he is good natured and approachable.

Humor has helped Dad in many ways. It has helped him cope with problems at home and in the office. It has helped him survive numerous crises and battle his personal demons. More importantly, Dad's sense of humor has brought us together.
My 53 years old dad

If laughter is the best medicine, my Dad must be the cure. His humor has taught me not to take things seriously and to face life with a smile, even at the hands of defeat and misfortune.  My Dad also doesn’t look as old as his other friends or former classmates.

Compared to other people his age, he still has a full set of hair. That, of course, may be due to his genes, but I’d like to think his happy mood contributed a lot to his youthful features. They say it takes less effort to smile than to frown. In Dad’s case, this is certainly true which explains why he has a lot of laugh lines on his face. Smiling has made Dad age more slowly and he considers this his fountain of youth.

My Dad doesn’t take any vitamins or pills to stay healthy or beat stress. He relies on his sense humor to keep him going and hurdle difficult times. But if there ever was a fountain of youth, I guess the closest thing to this would be HyC150. As a kid, I haven’t tried it myself nor has my Dad who only heard about it recently.
The family that laughs together
stay young Forever

This is a collagen drink that the Japanese love and it’s believed to be the reason for their longevity and beauty. That probably explains its popularity there as well as in other Asian countries like China and South Korea.

Premium HyC 150 is a product of FINE Japan Co. Ltd., and was recently launched in the Philippines. Distributed by Bright Ray Enterprises, this unique drink is said to be the only one with the right combination of active anti-aging ingredients like hyaluronic acid, collagen, and ubiquinol.

To make the most of collagen, hydrate the skin, and fight wrinkles, they say the body needs hyaluronic acid which is also present in the skin. HyC 150 has 150 milligrams of hyaluronic acid to ensure that the skin has enough of this essential nutrient. Researchers say this lubricates the joints, ligaments and connective tissues. Taking HyC150 apparently helps other people stay healthy and have beautiful skin.
Wacky me with my younger brother Karl

Knowing my Dad, he would probably smile at these claims. But that’s okay since that’s his nature and we love him for that. We may not be rich. We sure don't have everything in life. But thanks to my Dad, I've learned that a smile can open doors and get you anywhere, and laughter during trying times can be music to the ears. Thanks for sharing your laughter with us, Dad! You have made us happy!

This article was written by my 12-year-old son who smiles a lot like his Dad.

Monsanto holds storytelling sessions for kids

Monsanto Philippines holds storytelling sessions on the only Filipino children’s book on biotech corn seeds titled Lina’s Town Rises Again.

Lina’s Town Rises Again was written for elementary school children to develop a basic understanding of the impact of agriculture products, specifically Dekalb corn seeds in social, economic and environmental terms. It touches on the themes of sustainability, collaboration and safety by narrating the true and inspiring story of how agricultural biotechnology seeds positively transformed a woman farmer’s life, and enabled her farming community to recover economically in the aftermath of a devastating typhoon.

Farmer Consolacion Reyes’ life turned upside down when Typhoon Pablo not only destroyed her house and crops but also her community – homes, farms, and livelihoods. She and her neighbors were forced to take shelter at an evacuation center when the entire municipality of Lambayong went under water. Upon returning to the village, they saw that the super typhoon had destroyed anything

Seeing her difficulty, a good samaritan lent her money which she used to buy a bag of Dekalb corn biotech seeds. Her harvest was abundant, so after some time, she was able to get back on her feet. A few harvests later and she started to earn consistently higher income. Now, she is among the more prosperous farmers in her town.

The story is authored by Chat Ocampo, Corporate Engagement Lead – Philippines, who has previously authored two children’s books. The illustration-rich book is written in an informative writing style, keeps the interest of young readers while conveying some highly technical information on seeds, to deliver the messages of sustainability and safety.

By writing this book, Ocampo feels she is able to do her share in “keeping the younger generations interested in matters related to agriculture while reaching out to equally important societal audiences such as young parents and teachers.”

Meantime, two learning hubs for elementary school children maintained by the Department of Education in Davao City continue to hold storytelling sessions with the book. The ages of students attending these sessions range from 5 to 10 years old.

So far, Monsanto Philippines has conducted storytelling sessions in 3 cities including Davao City which is the most influential city in Mindanao, Philippines. These sessions have reached more than 7,000 students from 36 schools (30 schools in Davao City, five in Tuguegarao City and one science elementary school in Quezon City). The Biotech Coalition of the Philippines has also distributed copies of the book to key government offices and public libraries.

Be safe with Wilkins

Water is essential to everyone, more so to a growing child. It helps maintain the balance of body fluids, which in turn improves digestion, transportation of nutrients, and maintenance of body temperature. It also helps energize muscles and replaces fluids kids lose when sweating. This is why it’s very critical that moms use only clean and safe water for their little ones.

Last June 25, Wilkins gathered selected mommy bloggers and media friends to share why drinking water should be safe for babies.

Guest speaker and renowned pediatrician Dr. Sally Gatchalian said that “Eighty percent of all illness in the developing world is water related.

For instance, unsafe drinking water, combined with lack of sanitation and poor hygiene, risks your child to diarrheal diseases. That’s nearly 1.7 billion cases recorded globally every year, making it the leading cause of malnutrition among children under 5 years old.”

She also added that a significant proportion of diarrheal diseases can be easily prevented through safe drinking water. Wilkins Distilled Water, Mom’s Most Trusted Water Brand and prescribed by pediatricians, is a vital part of Mom’s Circle of Trust. Owned by The Coca-Cola Company, Wilkins follows an international quality control system and uses only state-of-the-art equipment in packing and sealing its products to ensure clean and safe quality water.

Arnel Cabungcal, ASEAN Quality, Environment & Safety Director of The Coca-Cola Company, says distillation involves boiling water until it becomes vapor before condensing it back into water. This ensures that what you get is 100% clean and pure water.

“But unlike other distilled water processes, Wilkins Distilled undergoes an extra purifying step called reverse osmosis. This takes Wilkins Distilled water to another level of safety and quality. Reverse osmosis dissolves inorganic solids, like salts, and removes impurities and contaminates from the water,” he adds.

Wilkins understands that safe drinking water is only one of the many challenges and uncertainties moms face in raising a child in today’s unsafe world.

“In this world where everyone claims to be trustworthy, moms may have a difficult time knowing who she can truly trust. That’s why Wilkins is providing mothers everywhere with trusted concern through expert information, relevant advice & tips, and real-life experiences, which they can learn and share through the Wilkins Circle of Trust,” says Criselle Pascual, Stills Category Group Brand Manager of Coca-Cola Philippines.

Keeping children hydrated is not a one-woman job. Moms would need a lot of hands for this task. Good thing they have a Circle of Trust – moms’ most trusted support group that ensures the safety and health of their little ones, even when mom is not around. That includes making sure that the kids are getting enough to drink. Moms get that assurance from grandparents, siblings, the best friend, yaya, pediatricians, OB/GYNS, teachers, and even trusted products.

Effective herbal remedy for osteoarthritis

Here’s the painful truth — we’re all at risk of suffering from joint pains due to osteoarthritis, a debilitating disease that occurs when the protective cartilage of the ends of bones wears thin as we age. Getting proper relief from this painful disease is often a complicated issue because people in their golden years often also have to deal with other health complications.
People in their golden years are
at risk of suffering from
joint pains due to osteoarthritis,
a debilitating disease that occurs
 when the protective cartilage
of the ends of bones wears thin as we age.

Mother Nature has its ways of healing us. What seemed to be a source of relentless pain can now be remedied by Arthrite, a breakthrough phyto-medicine consisting of 14 herbal components that work synergistically to reduce pain caused by osteoarthritis. Arthrite also has the added benefit of reducing joint inflammation and improving joint mobility. Arthrite is the first traditional herbal medicine approved by the Philippine Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for joint pain.

A clinical study published in the Indian Journal of Clinical Practice in 2010, showed Arthrite to have significant reduction in pain associated with osteoarthritis, such as, pain while walking (71% pain reduction), pain during squatting (63.2% pain reduction), pain while sitting cross legged (66.1% pain reduction) and pain while climbing (42.1% pain reduction). Arthrite restores the normal day-to-day activities and improves the quality of life of people suffering from osteoarthritis.

In the same clinical study, patients taking Arthrite reduced their use of Diclofenac by 57%. With all the harm caused by long-term usage of NSAIDs (gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcers, bloating, heart problems, and sometimes kidney and liver failure) for osteoarthritis, people can now turn to Arthrite - a proven safe and effective herbal medication.

What differentiates Arthrite from other osteoarthritis medications is that Arthrite does not only aid in pain management and relieving inflammation but also prevents degeneration of cartilage. Arthrite does this in shorter timeframe than other non-synthetic drugs with lesser dosage requirements. A minimum period of four to 12 weeks is recommended with a daily dosage of two soft gel capsules each day for Arthrite’s onset of action to reach its peak level of providing relief.

One of the key aspects of Arthrite poly-herbal formulation is its safety and efficacy for long-term use. A combination of both moderate to mild-acting herbs gives Arthrite potency with no toxicity. This was proven not just by years of traditional use but by modern scientific methods, hence, the FDA classification of traditional herbal medicine with therapeutic claims. One of its most active ingredients is Commiphora mukul which is responsible for its anti – inflammatory action. Pain management is achieved because of Vitex negundo and Trigonella foecum – graecum. With long – term usage, cartilage support is achieved because of Withania somnifera.

An amalgam of medical science and tradition, Arthrite provides a holistic approach in treating osteoarthritis, giving more reasons for people in their golden years to experience joy in life.

Stay healthy with Premium HyC150

While most men may not be conscious of their looks, they do strive for good health and wellness, especially as they get older. Aside from keeping a regular fitness routine and following a healthy diet, the use of supplements keeps their energy and stamina at an optimum as they go through the demands of the day.
The number of health supplements available in the market might make choosing the right one difficult. While most multivitamins offer all-in-one coverage, there are some that focus specifically on the specific demands of men.
Dr. Rodolfo Apostol

Dr. Rodolfo Apostol, an expert on aesthetics science and skin medicine, says men should take advantage of Premium HyC150, which has been described as the modern-day “fountain of youth,” and is considered to be a woman’s secret weapon to looking young, staying physically fit, and feeling good about herself.

“Premium HyC150 is not solely for women and vanity,” says Dr. Apostol, who is the vice president for business affairs of the International Academy for Aesthetic Sciences and a specialist at the Manila Eye Surgical Center.

“Actually Premium HyC150 is a very good supplement for mature people 30 years old and above for it prevents and slows down the aging process, which ultimately makes one look young and healthy. It contains ingredients that are continuously depleted as we age, and there is no way for our body to replenish them but from external sources,” he says.

Premium HyC150 combines three youth-inducing ingredients in one supplement drink: collagen, hyaluronic acid and ubiquinol. Other active ingredients, like vitamin C, biotin, and pearl coix, complement these elements.

“The reason why it is called Premium HyC150 is because it contains 150 milligrams of hyaluronic acid, which is considered to be a natural moisturizer, especially for the skin. It is the reason why the skin looks full and supple, because it eliminates the formation of fine lines, giving younger looking skin,” he explains. “It also gives benefits to those patients who are suffering from arthritis for it replenishes the hyaluronic acid inside the joints, giving more flexibility in movement.”

On the other hand, collagen is major component of the body’s connective tissues, providing structural support where it is found, such as in the skin, muscle, ligaments, tendon, cartilage and bone.

“Premium HyC150 comes with 6,000 milligrams of collagen. Collagen is a very important component in our body, and its depletion from one's body manifest in the form of early aging. A desirable therapeutic effect of collagen is its blood thinning effect, thereby improving blood circulation that eventually leads to a better and healthier look. Patients who have undergone a coronary bypass, as well as post-stroke and hypertensive patients, would benefit much from this key component,” explains the health expert.

The other components of Premium HyC150 work in tandem to bring about good health and improved well-being to its users.

Ubiquinol is an enzyme co-factor that helps strengthen a patient’s skeletal system and cardiac muscles, which are weakened by excessive amounts of anti-lipedemic drugs to counter bad cholesterol. This substance also helps deliver more energy at the intracellular level of the muscle, so as not to weaken it.

Pearl coix has a very popular whitening and anti-cancer effect, especially in China, Korea and Japan. It is a breakfast staple for centuries, and is one of the main secrets for attaining beautiful complexion. Biotin is the only vitamin that maintains the integrity of hair and nails. Lastly, vitamin C contributes potent antioxidant effect, plus extra whitening property.

Based on clinical studies done in Japan, North America, and Europe, about 93 percent of Premium HyC150 users reported improved hair, nails, and skin with continued use. Although results can vary per individual, it only takes one to two weeks to see the positive changes.

Premium HyC150 is manufactured by Fine Japan Co. Ltd, one of the finest and multi-awarded companies in Japan. “It is the only company in the world that produces products in nano form that render their products readily absorbed by the body and showing its effect in a short period of time after its intake,” adds Dr. Apostol. “With all the components mentioned above, it’s just like forming a dream team of health and beauty secret regimen.”
