LPU Culinary Institute Braves the 2015 HKICC

Lyceum of the Philippines Culinary Institute (LPUCI) sends off fresh and young talents to compete in one of Asia's toughest culinary competition, the Hong Kong International Culinary Classic. The esteemed culinary battle will be part of the 16th International Exhibition of Food & Drink, Hotel, Restaurant & Foodservice Equipment, and Supplies & Services known as HOFEX 2015.

Angelique Chua, Emareene Francisco, Ban Vill Villaruel,
Janemar Gyle Gicana, Jolina Dela Cruz, and Paul Lyndon Fornoles
This year, LPUCI aims to bring home honor and a sense of pride to a new batch of LPUCI and LPU students. Chef Dan Basilio, the Culinary Director of LPUCI believes that the program they offer at LPUCI can mold students to be capable to challenge other culinary practitioners not only in Asia, but of the world. LPUCI integrate within their programs not only the latest information and techniques but also with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment.

"Students at LPUCI are able to master the use of equipment used and facilitated worldwide," shared Chef Dan. "We believe by allowing the students to be exposed to these type of kitchen set-up where they can practice their techniques learned through lectures and seminars boosts their self-esteem in the process."

LPU CI will send Angelique Chua, Emareene Francisco, Ban Vill Villaruel, Janemar Gyle Gicana, Jolina Dela Cruz, and Paul Lyndon Fornoles bannered by Chef Winnie Wong, Chef Kazzie Sy and Chef Clyden San Pedro from the faculty pool to the 2015 HKICC with much confidence and regard. These students, however, do not take the competition very lightly. They had weeks and weeks of preparation and practice being supervised by a pool of LPUCI's well-regarded faculty of chefs. But most importantly, the representatives are given final briefing on how to take on tasks and be able to face even the most difficult challenges they may encounter in Hong Kong.

"We have to note the fact that these students are first-timers when it comes to culinary competitions abroad," Chef Dan admitted. "And their being 'fresh' is what makes them motivated and driven to win." It is in fact a tradition of LPUCI to send raw talents to culinary competitions such as the HKICC. This is to provide opportunities to as many students that show extraordinary talents, skills and performances.

But LPUCI along with Lyceum of the Philippines (LPU) as a team is not a fresh face to enter the competition though. In fact, back in 2013, four of the representatives sent off to compete were able to bring home awards and distinctions. These admired individuals were Bernard Mayo (Bronze; Hot Cooking U25 Apprentices: Beef Short Ribs), Redentor Agustin (Bronze; Display-Finger Food), and Carlo Licher Reyes (Silver; Professional Sous vide Cook - Chicken).

Huggies Philippines launches the “Expert Panel” consultation tool

Huggies Philippines launches, “Expert Panel,” a new online consultation tool to help guide new and experienced moms through their motherhood journey. Through its parent company, Kimberly-Clark Philippines, they partnered with the Perinatal Association of the Philippines (PAP) to create an online hub for moms to get direct access to helpful tips and advice on maternal and baby care. The official launch was held in a media event at the EDSA Shangri-la Hotel.
Perinatal Association of the Philippines (PAP) and
Kimberly-Clark executives signed the Expert Panel partnership

The PAP is a premier council of health professionals who have dedicated their lives to understanding baby healthcare and motherhood, and sharing it with those who seek the right information. During the launch, Kimberly-Clark Philippines and the PAP formalized their partnership through an official contract signing between both organizations, recognizing their mutual efforts to provide easy access to tips that will ultimately help guide moms in raising their babies.

“As the lead advocate and major advisory body on maternal and neonatal healthcare in the Philippines, we are very proud and excited of our partnership with Kimberly-Clark Philippines. Together, we hope to continue advocating for optimal and ethical care among healthcare providers and our stakeholders, promoting a harmonious collaboration between both parties,” said Dra. Ma. Theresa Hilario-Jimenez, President of the PAP.

According to a recent survey conducted by Kimberly-Clark Philippines, online information is one of the top sources moms use when getting tips about baby care and motherhood. Recognizing this, Huggies Philippines created the Expert Panel, a free online consultation platform that offers moms easy access to credible tips and advice straight from the experts of the PAP. Now, expert advice is only a click away with the Expert Panel currently housed in the official Huggies Philippines website at www.huggies.com.ph/ExpertPanel.

“Kimberly-Clark Philippines understands the challenges of moms when they search online for any useful data about maternal and baby care. With so much information available and numerous sources claiming themselves as ‘experts’, you can never be too sure of whom you can trust. ‘Expert Panel’ breaks through the clutter and confusion, having been created by the real experts of maternal and baby care,” said Irish Tan Chua, Marketing Manager of Kimberly-Clark Philippines.

When clicking on the ‘Expert Panel’ tab in the Huggies Philippines website, users will be given a list of commonly asked topics to choose from that they can further learn about. Each topic will feature a set of previously answered questions that users can refer to at any time of the day while a text box will be provided for those who would like to ask a new question. Once submitted, the questions will be reviewed and answered by select doctors from PAP and an e-mail notification will be sent to the user if their questions have been answered.

With the availability of the Expert Panel, moms can now hear expert advice straight from the trusted doctors of the PAP. Expert Panel will also compile all the information shared between active online moms and doctors, store it in the Huggies website, and make it available for free to anyone who wants to access it at any time of the day. This allows fellows moms to learn about key topics that others moms are asking about.

Through this online platform, Kimberly-Clark Philippines and the PAP have created an accessible and credible source for moms, providing them a new opportunity to learn more about motherhood and how to better raise babies. As a result, moms and babies can feel assured that they are guided every step of the way.

“Through our partnership and the official launch of the Expert Panel, we hope moms will now feel assured knowing that the online information they receive are directly from the experts. Together, PAP and Kimberly-Clark Philippines will remain to be moms’ everyday partners in baby and child care,” ended Dra. Hilario-Jimenez.

Polident denture care awareness campaign

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), in collaboration with the Philippine Prosthodontic Society (PPS) recently (May 15) launched a metro-wide advocacy campaign to promote proper denture care among Filipinos to help them rediscover uninhibited joy and regain the confidence to eat, speak and smile.

The latest study revealed that 9 million Filipinos wear dentures, making the Philippines the country with the highest incidence of denture wearers in Asia. Filipinos who wear dentures are mostly in the 35-69 year-old age group, wear false teeth, whether full, half, or partial.

This was revealed in the study “Oral Care U&A: Market Understanding Study Middle East & Asia’’ conducted by Ipsos Marketing for GlaxoSmithKline(GSK).

“The qualitative research titled ‘The Emerging Consumer Denture Journey,' conducted by Nick Newall and Rachel Kern for GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) revealed that in the Philippines, majority of denture wearers are between 35-69 years old. Wearers have full, half, or partial dentures,’’ said Isa Marfori, GSK Polident product manager.

GSK’s Polident embarks on a campaign to educate the public on the proper maintenance of dentures to allow them to pursue regular activities such as speaking and eating without fear.

Another study, ‘’Oral Care U&A Market Understanding Study Middle East & Asia’’ conducted in July 2014, also revealed that sixty one percent of denture wearers are female, while thirty nine percent are male.

“The same study reported that eighty four percent of denture users reside in Metro Manila, with nine percent in Metro Cebu and six percent in Metro Davao. Fifty six percent cited careless oral regime as a reason for wearing dentures, while nineteen percent attributed wearing dentures to loosing teeth in accident, and twelve percent to illness,’’ Marfori added.

Nevertheless, a lot of Filipinos experience denture problems, resulting to loss of joy and confidence in performing daily activities such as eating, smiling, speaking and socializing.

Dr. Danny Magtanong of the Philippine Prosthodontic Society said that over the years, there has been a stigma attached to wearing pustiso mainly because a lot of embarrassing mishaps are associated with wearing dentures.

“It is not uncommon to hear stories of false teeth coming off while speaking or while eating. In fact, in YouTube, there are a lot of videos posted which show these embarrassing moments featuring people from all walks of life. Whose confidence wouldn’t be demolished once a denture wearer finds himself in this situation,’’ said Dr. Magtanong.

The PPS official also noted that as a result of these humiliating situations, some denture wearers become very shy. “Others would cover their mouths while speaking, some would refuse to attend social functions. To be safe, others would not eat food that require much biting, thus they are inhibited,’’ Dr. Magtanong added.

Evelyn Del Mundo, registrar at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), knew that the latent risk of dentures falling off could be disastrous to her reputation as a university official. “Since I face and interact with students on a daily basis, my dentures need to be solidly secure. It’s really difficult when I speak while my dentures rattle about. I especially become wary when I eat; I do not know what happens in my mouth when I chew: have the dentures fallen off? Was it food or was it my dentures?” admitted Del Mundo.

Wearing dentures gave Lina Santiago, 32, a resident of from Mandaluyong, great relief from lacking the essential teeth to be presentable. “I could not get the job that I wanted because of my bad teeth. As soon as I got the money to finance it, I went to a dentist to have dentures fitted. True enough, I gained back confidence and more importantly, I found a satisfying job,” said Lina.

The problems being encountered by Filipino denture wearers are mainly caused by complacency in consulting dentists and in engaging in proper denture care, the two studies confirmed.

Dr. Magtanong said that generally, Filipino denture wearers lack knowledge and vigilance on the proper practices before wearing dentures, while wearing them, and before they go to bed at night.

“There are responsibilities that come with wearing dentures, lack of proper maintenance measures lead to more serious problems like bad breath, swollen gums, or loose fit. While it is true that wearing dentures is tedious, a change in habits and lifestyle will help give back self-confidence to the denture wearer,” said Dr. Magtanong.

Among these responsibilities is to make sure that the dentures are regularly and properly cleaned, and that they snugly fit in the mouth which only professional dentists can do for the patient.

While forty nine percent of the more than 200 denture wearer-respondents in the “Oral Care U&A Market Understanding Study” have had it for five years or less, a high fifty three percent visit dentists only when they have specific problem such as broken or cracked dentures.

“Denture wearers also lack information in the proper way to care for their dentures. For instance, sixty four percent do not remove it before going to sleep at night. By not removing dentures and soaking in proper cleansers, bacterias build up and cause more problems in the mouth,’’ the study further cited.

Clearly, denture usage is very high but knowledge and use of products like denture adhesives and denture cleansers is low, Marfori said.

“Denture cleansers are not very popular and most use regular toothpastes for cleaning dentures, which should not be the case because toothpaste contains abrasives that scratch dentures, leaving small holes where bacteria can collect and grow. Toothpaste also contains bleaching chemicals that may damage the dentures and whiten its pink portion,’’ Dr. Magtanong stated.

On the other hand, denture adhesives usage is low because denture wearers do not see the importance of having snugly fit dentures. “As much as possible, dentures should be firm and stable in the mouth to stop food particles from getting into the dentures,’’ Dr. Magtanong advised.

GSK, one of the largest global healthcare companies and is currently one of the key players in the oral care strategy, has come up with Polident, an ally of denture wearers in maintaining and caring for false teeth to give back to denture wearers their self-confidence and allows them to pursue regular activities such as speaking and eating without fear or shame.

Polident is the leading denture care brand in the Philippines. The “Take the Polident Challenge!” PR campaign is part of the brand integration program that will alleviate the perceived complacency of Filipino denture wearers on their dental health. In collaboration with Philippine Prosthodontic Society (PPS), this campaign aims to erase the stigma of social, emotional and physical tortures brought about by improper denture care and will feature GSK’s Polident Denture Adhesive Cream and Polident Denture Cleanser.

Polident Denture Adhesive Cream, for instance, helps secure dentures properly. Applying Polident Denture Adhesive Cream on the dentures once a day helps fasten it securely for up to twelve hours.

Polident Denture Cleanser, on the other hand, is formulated to clean dentures, remove stains and kill 99.9 percent of odor-causing particles.

Polident dares denture wearers to live a healthy life free of inhibitions by taking the Polident Challenge. For free samples and delivery nationwide of both Polident Denture Cleanser and Polident Denture Adhesive Cream, call 924-2475.

Polident Mounts First-of-its-Kind Installation in Manila

• Polident mounts bigger-than-life inflatable installation in Metro Manila.

• The installation depicts a denture biting onto a corn cob, aims to highlight the physical tortures experienced daily by denture wearers; which according to dental health professionals is part of the bigger torture problems – emotional and social.

• There will be three scheduled installations in three busy locations.

To create awareness about its metro-wide advocacy campaign promoting proper denture care among Filipinos and help denture wearers regain the confidence to eat, speak and smile, Polident, a product of GlaxoSmithKline, unveils a first-of-its-kind installation on May 14, 2015, at the Palacio de Maynila in Malate, Manila.

The installation is part of “Take the Polident Challenge!” campaign which will run a series of educational activities in Metro Manila such as free denture consultations and fun denture torture tests like corn-eating contests and videoke contests.

Towering at 30 feet, the inflatable installation depicts a giant denture biting onto a corn cob to highlight the physical tortures experienced daily by denture wearers, which according to dental health professionals are part of bigger emotional and social problems.

“Wearing dentures is difficult and what Polident aims to do is take away the worry that it would move, fall out, and cause embarrassment. Dentures should not take away the fun out of enjoying their favorite food or singing like their favorite idols. Polident thus challenges denture wearers to do their everyday activities like eating, speaking and smiling with confidence,” says Isa Marfori, GSK Polident product manager.

The Polident installation was inaugurated at the Rajah Sulayman in Malate, Manila on May 15-17. Other schedules were on May 22 to 24 at the Plaza Miranda, Quiapo, Manila and on May 29 to 31 at Tutuban Market.

Polident dares denture wearers to live a healthy life free of inhibitions by taking the Polident Challenge. For free samples and delivery nationwide of both Polident Denture Cleanser and Polident Denture Adhesive Cream, call 924-2475.

Ai-Ai sizzles in a hot concert at Skydome

It was a hot summer night in Quezon City yesterday (May 16,2015). However, that didn’t stop fans of Comedy Concert Queen Ai-Ai de las Alas from flocking to the Skydome at SM North EDSA to witness one of the hottest acts of the year.

Ms. AiAi de las Alas backstage photo
7:00 p.m. people are lining-up at the Skydome
The place recently made headlines again as the venue of Ai-Ai’s thanksgiving concert “Ai Am What Ai Am.” Judging from the audience feedback, it was a huge success!

Inside, people laughed, gasped, and screamed as the lovely comedienne sang, cracked jokes, and entertained the audience with her signature brand of comedy and her dazzling and - at times - outrageous outfits.

Crowd inside the skydome
Lady Gaga herself would have been proud if she saw Ai-Ai that night. In spite of her over-the-top and sexy outfits, Ai-Ai carried herself well, looked great in them, and endeared herself more to her loyal fans. That’s how good Ai-Ai’s version of Lady Gaga is and it is a testament to her talent as an artist and entertainer.

Duet with Alden Richards

With her long time friend Allan K
Of course, what made the concert even more memorable was Ai-Ai’s choice of songs sprinkled with her antics. Her challenging medley of Whitney Houston hits was a joy to listen to. Ai-Ai managed to hit the right notes without sounding awkward or forced.
The "Biritan" portion with Dessa
Adding spice to Ai-Ai’s special song and dance numbers were her guests and good fiends - some of who have been with her for years and have shared her ups and downs in show business.

Hugging the limelight with her were hunks Aljur Abrenica and Alden Richards whose presence raised the heat even more among female and some male fans!

Mr. Gardo Versoza
Voice of Asia Dessa managed to light up the night with her fantastic performance and let’s not forget Alan K who ignited listeners with his soulful number. Other laughs were provided by guest performers from Zirkoh Bar – dubbed as Asia’s biggest comedy bar and a place close to Ai-Ai’s heart.
AiAi's Let The Love Begin family Ruru Madrid, Gabbi Garcia and Gardo Versoza

Capping off the evening were Ai-Ai’s co-stars in her new GMA hit series “Let the Love Begin.” These included Gardo Versoza, Ruru Madrid, and Gabby Garcia. Fans thought that would be the end of it but were pleasantly surprised when the Comedy Concert Queen returned and belted out some popular disco numbers complete with confetti, smoke and fog effects, and colourful lights for her finale.

All in all, it was a night to remember for Ai-Ai’s fans as their idol proved once again that she has what it takes to give a memorable performance. Hats off to the event organizers for a job well done!

A funny thing happened to GMA-7

Something funny has happened to GMA-7. The Kapuso network recently became a happier place to stay in with the addition of Ai-Ai de las Alas!

Starting Monday, May 4, 2015, the Philippine Comedy Queen is set to conquer your hearts and funny bones with her new prime time soap “Let the Love Begin.” From the looks of it, local fans will surely be delighted with Ai-Ai’s own brand of comedy that was formerly a staple of ABS-CBN for the past 16 years.
In the new TV series, Ai-Ai plays a cool mom named Jeni who dishes out advice on love and life together with her best friend Tony (Gardo Versoza) via their popular radio program. She has two kids from her alcoholic live-in boyfriend Enrico (Joko Diaz), namely Erick (Ruru Madrid) and Elsa (Ar Angel Aviles).

On the other hand, Tony is a widower whose daughter Pia (Gabbi Garcia) falls in love with her childhood friend Erick. This unexpected development will test the bond of friendship between Jeni and Tony and put them in dramatic and funny situations. How will the two parents react to their children’s relationship? Will Jeni and Tony become even closer or will this unexpected turn of events destroy their long friendship?

There’s more: What happens when the station manager Jom (Mark Anthony Fernandez) and his best friend Jess (Neil Ryan Sese) both fall in love with Jeni? Adding spice to this complicated development is Katy (Gladys Reyes), the Diva DJ and Jeni’s rival at the other station. How will she react to Jeni’s problems?
