RP smartphone users reach 30 percent

The smartphone penetration in the Philippines at the end of 2014 was around 30   percent and is expected to be at around 40 percent at the end of 2015.

Almost two-thirds of mobile phone subscriptions in South East Asia and Oceania will be using smartphones by 2020.

By 2020, mobile traffic in the region will multiply nine times reaching three Exabytes /month

Applications for social networking, instant messaging and video streaming dominate smartphone usage - Facebook and YouTube are consistently in the top five mobile apps in the countries analyzed, including the Philippines
Afrizal Abdul Rahim,
Ericsson Head of ConsumerLab for Region South East Asia and Oceania

Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) releases its third South East Asia and Oceania Region Appendix to the Ericsson Mobility Report. The appendix illustrates regional contrasts in areas such as smartphone uptake, top app usage, access to LTE, and network performance.

Mature markets such as Australia and Singapore, where LTE is widely available, have a very high mobile broadband penetration, already exceeding 90 percent. Developing markets on the other hand, still have a long way to go, which offers a unique opportunity for mobile operators to enhance the mobile broadband experience for users.

The smartphone penetration in the Philippines is estimated at around 30 percent and is expected to be at around 40 percent by the end of 2015. This provides an exceptional growth opportunity for service providers and device manufacturers in South East Asia as users consume more data through newer and faster devices.

Afrizal Abdul Rahim, Ericsson Head of ConsumerLab for Region South East Asia and Oceania, says: “The increasing availability of affordable smartphones, internet access and mobility is enabling more consumers to access the benefits of the Networked Society. In fact, in the Philippines smartphones are the primary way of getting online”.

“Today in South East Asia and Oceania, 25 percent of handsets are smartphones. We predict that by 2020, smartphone subscriptions will grow three times to almost 800 million in the region, while LTE and 3G subscriptions will constitute almost 25 and 70 percent, respectively, of regional mobile subscriptions by 2020,” Afrizal said.

Uptake in smartphone subscriptions and growing interest in video and other app services will drive a nine-fold increase in mobile traffic volumes to three Exabytes /month by 2020.
Elie Hana
Ericsson President and Country Unit Head, Philippines and Pacific Islands (outgoing)

In the South East Asia and Oceania region, social networking, instant messaging and video streaming are among the top five app categories actively used by smartphone users in the region.  In the Philippines, Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Viber, YouTube and Instagram are the top five apps actively used by smartphone users.

For service providers, delivering a consistent user experience aligned with the most popular apps can help drive customer satisfaction. In order to do this, operators need to optimize and tune their networks to ensure users’ particular app coverage demands are catered for in different traffic situations and geographical areas.

Countries in the region with the best network performance are Australia and Singapore, due to their leadership in deploying LTE and LTE Advanced. This has meant that the gap in network performance with other countries across the region has widened.  “However, we expect developing countries’ networks will greatly improve in performance over the coming years”, Afrizal concluded.

Sun Life celebrates financial independence month

As it declares the month of June as Financial Independence Month, Sun Life of Canada (Philippines), Inc., the country’s longest standing life insurance company, urges Filipinos to prioritize financial preparedness for their health needs and employ more appropriate ways of preparing financially for their other needs.

This is in response to the results of a Social Weather Station survey commissioned by the company where Filipinos claim to be prepared to fund expensive purchases, despite having health-related concerns.

The survey showed that 1 of 2 Filipinos are planning to make an expensive purchase within the next two years, such as land, a house and lot, or a car, or expand their business, with 9 out of 10 actually prepared to fund it.

But at the same time, 7 of 10 Filipinos are worried about the uncertainties brought about by worries such as the death of a breadwinner (90%), a family member suffering a grave illness (90%), and inability to pay for huge medical expenses (80%).

Only 6 of 10 of the respondents say that they are prepared financially in the event of a grave illness in the family.

"There seems to be a disconnect between the Filipinos’ priorities and concerns and the way they financially prepare for these. They are worried about their health and possible illness but they do not prepare financially. Most of them rely on their active income or on other people to fund their needs," said Sun Life President and CEO Riza Mantaring. “What we need to remember is that wealth and health go hand in hand. By making sure that the right products are availed of to prepare for both wealth goals and health needs, Juan can be more fitt to live free."

Financial Independence Month activities
In order to address the situation and help Filipinos act on their financial concerns, Sun Life is launching the #FIT2LiveFree campaign this Financial Independence Month of June.

To inspire them to take care of both their wealth and health in a fun and interactive way, Sun Life will make available digital content to engage the public. Those who would like to determine their money mannerisms can take the Moneyrism Quiz on Facebook, while those who would like to share their fitness journey can join the conversation on Instagram with the hashtag #Wel|nessWednesday. By engaging with fellow wealth and health enthusiasts online, they get the chance to win minor prizes of FitBit wireless activity wristbands and a grand prize of a travel package to Seoul, South Korea.

For those wanting to go on an in-depth learning of personal finance, modular lessons will be offered online in the Brighter Life Institute. Its initial offering is a five-module lesson for those starting their financial journey. This can be accessed at brighterlife.com.ph for free, where relevant articles are also shared regularly. The Brighter Life Institute is another pioneering effort of Sun Life to make financial education accessible and within reach to more Filipinos.

Another digital activation to watch out for is the #FIT2LiveFree Twitter and Google Hangout with RAPPLER on June 10 at 2pm. Hear from our speakers, who advocate wellness and prosperity, battle it out on what must be prioritized: Wealth or Health? Hosted by Sam Oh, this will prove to be a cliffhanger until the very end of the discussion.

Aside from the online initiatives, the public can also attend the #FIT2LiveFree Expo where bull runner, Jaymie Pizzaro joins other known personalities such as actor-triathlete Matteo Guidicelli, lifestyle blogger Anton Diaz, TV host Edric Mendoza, and financial experts Randell Tiongson and Rose Fausto who will guide participants in setting their wealth and health goals. These experts will also share tips and inspiring stories on achieving the balance between health and wealth. The event will be held on June 20 at the SMX Convention Center in the Mall of Asia Complex.

All these initiatives will help Filipinos determine the product solutions that will help them achieve the wealth and health goals that they have identified. To address their wealth goals, Sun Life offers the Sun Life Prosperity Funds, which will be promoted in a new TV spot called "Live Free" that encourages Filipinos to invest in their financial freedom. For their health needs, Sun Life has Sun LifeAssure and Sun Flexitink Assist, to ensure that they have the funds to regain their health, should sickness occur.

“We're here to empower Filipinos so they can truly enjoy a life that's free from financial worries,” Mantaring said. "They deserve nothing less.” Now are you ready to be #FIT2LiveFree? For more information, visit brighterlife.com.ph and follow @sunlifeph on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Stop tooth sensitivity with Sensodyne mouthwash

For 9 out of 10 Filipinos who suffer from sensitive teeth or pangingilo, “sensitive” is a bit of an understatement to describe the delicate condition of their teeth.
Luis Manzano - Sensodyne brand ambassador "Say No  To Pangingilo"

Characterized by a short, sharp, shooting pain, which many sensitivity/pangingilo sufferers often choose to just endure, the discomfort caused by sensitive teeth may only last for a short period, but the emotional effects of missing out on those precious moments with your loved ones over food and drinks has a far longer impact.

“Having sensitive teeth can mean anything from getting a mild twinge to having severe discomfort that can last for several hours. It can also be an early warning sign of more serious dental problems.” said Dr. Rannier Reyes of the Philippine Periodontal Society.
The new Sensodyne mouthwash

Sensitive teeth occurs when the layer of enamel becomes thin and exposes the softer dentine underneath. This soft layer makes up the inner part of the tooth leading to the tooth’s nerve center and triggers the pain you feel.

Other things that can cause sensitive teeth are:
Brushing too hard or using a hard bristled toothbrush
Teeth grinding
Gingivitis (gum disease)
Receding Gums

Last year, GlaxoSmithKline, the makers of Sensodyne, the #1 sensitivity toothpaste in the Philippines which is also recommended by dentists, spearheaded the “Say No to Ngilo” advocacy where dentists, consumers and Sensodyne came together to enjoin everyone to heed the call to take action to no longer endure the discomfort of pangingilo.
Heather Pelier,
Incoming General Manager, GSK Consumer Healthcare

In 2015, GSK and Sensodyne takes the advocacy a notch higher with the launch of “Great Little Moments” digital campaign which encourages Filipinos not only to “Say No to Ngilo,” but also share their experiences after converting to Sensodyne and how they are able to fully enjoy their great little moments sensitivity-free.

“With the start of the summer season, everyone is now looking for someplace or something cool, be it at the beach, the pool or even just a quick respite from the heat with some cold drinks or a cone of ice cream, but if you have sensitive teeth, enjoying those cold treats can be a bit tricky,” says Heather Pelier, Incoming Consumer Healthcare General Manager, GSK Philippines.

“But it’s more than just missing out on food. When you choose to just endure the pain, you do it at the expense of fully enjoying experiences and social occasions that go along with it, making you miss out on those great little moments with your loved ones,” Pelier added.

The digital campaign encourages consumers to share their “Great Little Moments” in the Sensodyne Philippines website (www.sensodyne.com.ph) by uploading a photo of a moment (eg. sipping hot chocolate, eating halo-halo, etc.) they can now fully enjoy because they are pangingilo-free. Winners of the contest will win a trip for two to South Korea.

“For those who have sensitive teeth like me, I know you’d agree that it is not something you can just ignore. Sensitive teeth can ruin the mood of any romantic date, or stop you from enjoying those unforgettable moments with your loved ones,” Sensodyne brand ambassador, Luis Manzano shares.

Heather Pelier adds, “Our message is simple, there is no need for sensitivity to impact anyone’s life. Making a simple change to one’s oral care regimen will make a real difference. Now that Sensodyne has reached out to more Filipinos who used to just endure the pain, we want to encourage them to tell their stories now that they can enjoy their favorite food and drinks and fully enjoy the eating moments with their family and friends without fear of pangingilo.”

Fresher breath with Sensodyne Mouthwash

With the launch of the new campaign, GSK is introducing the new Sensodyne Mouthwash to complement its toothpaste and complete its expert sensitivity regimen to help consumers put an end to teeth sensitivity.

Sensodyne Mouthwash has all the benefits of a regular mouthwash like providing lasting freshening effect, and fluoride to strengthen teeth and protect against decay. It’s alcohol-free plus it gives pangingilo relief. It has two variants (Cool Mint and Extra Fresh 250mL) at Php165 SRP. The mouthwash is distributed in major supermarkets and drugstores nationwide.

“We highly recommend that you use the Sensodyne mouthwash together with the Sensodyne toothpaste to give clinically proven relief and daily protection for pangingilo,” says Pelier.

So, if you have pangingilo, switching to Sensodyne to replace your regular toothpaste and mouthwash can make a big difference not only in your enjoyment of everyday life, but also in your overall oral health.

Don’t let the pain of sensitivity get in the way. Say No to Ngilo and Yes to those Great Little Moments!

LPU Culinary Institute Braves the 2015 HKICC with Fresh and Raw Talents

Lyceum of the Philippines Culinary Institute (LPUCI) sends off fresh and young talents to compete in one of Asia's toughest culinary competition, the Hong Kong International Culinary Classic. The esteemed culinary battle will be part of the 16th International Exhibition of Food & Drink, Hotel, Restaurant & Foodservice Equipment, and Supplies & Services known as HOFEX 2015.
LPU Culinary Institute students

This year, LPUCI aims to bring home honor and a sense of pride to a new batch of LPUCI and LPU students. Chef Dan Basilio, the Culinary Director of LPUCI believes that the program they offer at LPUCI can mold students to be capable to challenge other culinary practitioners not only in Asia, but of the world. LPUCI integrate within their programs not only the latest information and techniques but also with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment.

"Students at LPUCI are able to master the use of equipment used and facilitated worldwide," shared Chef Dan. "We believe by allowing the students to be exposed to these type of kitchen set-up where they can practice their techniques learned through lectures and seminars boosts their self-esteem in the process."

LPU CI will send Angelique Chua, Emareene Francisco, Ban Vill Villaruel, Janemar Gyle Gicana, Jolina Dela Cruz, and Paul Lyndon Fornoles bannered by Chef Winnie Wong, Chef Kazzie Sy and Chef Clyden San Pedro from the faculty pool to the 2015 HKICC with much confidence and regard. These students, however, do not take the competition very lightly. They had weeks and weeks of preparation and practice being supervised by a pool of LPUCI's well-regarded faculty of chefs. But most importantly, the representatives are given final briefing on how to take on tasks and be able to face even the most difficult challenges they may encounter in Hong Kong.

"We have to note the fact that these students are first-timers when it comes to culinary competitions abroad," Chef Dan admitted. "And their being 'fresh' is what makes them motivated and driven to win." It is in fact a tradition of LPUCI to send raw talents to culinary competitions such as the HKICC. This is to provide opportunities to as many students that show extraordinary talents, skills and performances.

But LPUCI along with Lyceum of the Philippines (LPU) as a team is not a fresh face to enter the competition though. In fact, back in 2013, four of the representatives sent off to compete were able to bring home awards and distinctions. These admired individuals were Bernard Mayo (Bronze; Hot Cooking U25 Apprentices: Beef Short Ribs), Redentor Agustin (Bronze; Display-Finger Food), and Carlo Licher Reyes (Silver; Professional Sous vide Cook - Chicken).

To learn more about LPUCI, you may visit their website at www.lpuculinary.edu.ph or visit their office and campus at Victoria corner Muralla Streets, Intramuros, Manila. For inquiries, contact +632 318 4000 or email info@lpuculinary.edu.ph or marketing@lpuculinary.edu.ph.

Manage your asthma and allergy with SHARP

Asthma is such a common disease that you probably know someone who had it as a child or still has it as an adult. You probably even have it. In the Philippines, three out of ten children and one out of ten adults suffer from asthma. Asthma episodes may vary among kids – some outgrow it, while some retain it to adulthood. There are even those whose asthma symptoms become dormant and then reappear later in life. While most parents would think that their children will outgrow their asthma, it is always better not to take chances.
Plasmacluster Ion technology removes 99% dust and other allergens

Modern advances may have made asthma easier to manage, but it is always a good measure to look for better ways to prevent asthma attacks caused by common triggers found in the house such as dust, pollen, dust mites, molds, and pet dander. Don’t let allergy triggers at home be the cause of your child’s (or your own) asthmatic episode. Make sure that the air you and your family breathe at home is clean and safe and free from airborne allergens with the unique Plasmacluster Ion Technology from Sharp.

Plasmacluster Ion (PCI) Technology is a one-of-a-kind air purifying innovation that releases positive and negative ions that effectively deactivate the effects of airborne allergens and other threats by up to 99%, make the air odor-free in a chemical-free method, remove static electricity which makes dust stick and gather, and provide better skin moisture.

Sharp has PCI Air Purifiers with Humidifying Function, which releases high-density Plasmacluster Ions and provides a well-balanced humidity in the air. Its air purifying power is doubled with its triple filters that collect airborne dust and odor particles. This is great for families that commonly experience dry eyes and dry throat, which act up normally when one wakes up. The Sharp PCI Air Purifier with Dehumidifying Function, on the other, provides air purification while also reducing the level of humidity indoors. This is perfect for households that retain too much moisture. Plasmacluster Ion Generators, meanwhile, are also good for use in work stations and industries such as restaurants, hotels, food processing factories and textile factories. Whichever air purifier or ion generator you choose, you will be able to keep airborne allergens at bay – making your indoor space friendly and safe for anyone suffering from asthma.

All Plasmacluster products are designed to deliver comfort to any room by creating an atmosphere filled with clean and safe air inspired by nature. Plasmacluster Ion Technology is engineered to provide superior Sharp experience, each made with the vision of providing comfort and convenience to each Filipino home. This is a commitment pushed by Sharp through its “Our Brand, Our Pride” philosophy, a pledge to uplift the quality of Filipinos’ lives through outstanding products.

Globe myBusiness launches WiFi Hub

As the demand for internet connectivity increases, more customers are looking for establishments that offer WiFi access as today’s lifestyle has become more on-the-go and digital.

Same is true for establishments such restaurants, cafes and bed and breakfast inns which are looking into growing their businesses with WiFi availability. From a customer’s point of view, an establishment with WiFi internet is more advantageous so he or she can stay connected for work or personal reasons.

This opportunity led Globe myBusiness, Globe Telecom’s small and medium business arm, to introduce the myBusiness WiFi Hub, a new package that allows businesses to earn more by offering customers access to a WiFi connection. Establishments will be able to offer WiFi for free or for a fee, opening up opportunities to attract more customers and at the same time, earn from this additional revenue stream.

Customers can opt for the Plan 1899 with speeds of up to 5 Mbps for a DSL or LTE connection. It comes with the WiFi Hub, alongside a Globe DUO number that allows unlimited calls to landline and Globe/TM numbers, and a dedicated after-sales support.
The WiFi Hub has a built-in printer to generate and print individual log-ins and passwords for customers for better security and management. It comes with unlimited PINs to service more customers at no extra cost and without the inconvenience of purchasing a new set of pins each time. The WiFi Hub can serve up to 20 simultaneous users and business owners can modify access to either time- or volume-based internet connectivity. The WiFi Hub is a secure connection and is not prone to abuse by non-paying customers.

The WiFi Hub is also an affordable add-on to existing Globe myBusiness broadband customers at only P299 per month for 24 months & can be availed on broadband plans starting at Plan 1599 for up to 3 Mbps to Plan 4299 for up to 15 Mbps.

As Senior Vice President for Globe myBusiness Martha Sazon says, “Our thrust in inspiring success among entrepreneurs continues with the launch of the myBusiness WiFi Hub that will allow our SME customers to offer internet connectivity to their customers, definitely a sound opportunity for them to grow their businesses and increase profits.”

Globe myBusiness continues to provide SMEs more opportunities to put their business on the map and ultimately serve more customers by making business solutions more accessible. Solutions include business websites, marketing tools, inventory and asset management systems and Google Apps for Work. Other solutions are also available designed to maximize profits through services like Globe Charge credit card terminals, vehicle trackers that boost efficiency, CCTVs for full visibility on assets such as store front and employees, and large format displays (LFD) that aid in additional business advertisements.

The Wonders of the Migraine Prevention Headband

Migraine is a severe, painful headache that is often preceded or accompanied by warning signs such as flashes of light, blind spots, tingling in the arms and legs, nausea, vomiting, and increased sensitivity to light and sound. The excruciating pain that migraines bring can last for hours or even days.

The main aspects of treatment includes trigger avoidance, acute symptomatic control, and pharmacological prevention. Medications are more effective when used earlier in an attack. However, frequent use of medications may result in medication overuse headache, in which the headaches become more severe and more frequent. This condition may occur with triptans, ergotamines, and analgesics, especially narcotic analgesics. Due to these concerns simple analgesics are recommended to be used less than three days per week at most.

Medical devices, such as neurostimulators, have some advantages in migraine prevention, mainly when common anti-migraine medications are contraindicated or in case of medication overuse. A transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation device is approved in the United States for the prevention of migraine and for the treatment of intractable chronic migraines with encouraging results for severe cases.

Cefaly is a CE (Conformité Européene) and ISO (International Organization for Standardization) certified transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation medical device designed to treat and prevent migraine headaches. This device can considerably reduce or replace the consumption of side effect producing medications. The device is the first cranial analgesic electrotherapeutic device to acquire ISO medical certification proven effective on migraine pain with no side effects.

Neurostimulation of the trigeminal nerve with Cefaly produces a relaxing effect. Regular repetition of this relaxing effect helps reduce the number of attacks of headache and migraine.

Cefaly is designed and developed in accordance with the strictest quality standards eliminating all possible short-term and long-term dangers.

More importantly, Cefaly is backed up by randomized controlled clinical trials such as a double blind clinical trial demonstrating its sedative effects on the central nervous system, efficient reduction of migraine attacks via a multicenter placebo controlled clinical trial and a prospective study of more than 2,000 patients confirming its efficacy and safety for migraine treatment.

GSK Philippines empowers women to fight cervical cancer‏

Every woman is at risk. Cervical cancer is a major problem for Filipino women: it is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among Filipinas, with seven dying of the dreaded disease every single day.  What’s more worrying is that two in three Filipinas diagnosed with cervical cancer may die within five years.  Cervical cancer is a risk for women regardless of race, age, lifestyle or socio-economic status.
Andi Manzano with her Power Pout against the Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer occurs when abnormal cells develop and spread in the cervix, the entrance between the vagina and the uterus.  The human papillomavirus (HPV), a very common virus, is the necessary cause of cervical cancer. It has been shown that 99.7 percent of cervical cancer patients are positive for HPV infection.  It is also estimated that up to 80 percent of women will be infected with HPV at some point in their lives.

While HPV is primarily transmitted via sexual intercourse, skin-to-skin genital contact is also a recognized mode of transmission. , ,  Lifestyle changes can help prevent the development of cervical cancer, such as being conscientious about one’s sexual activities. Beyond regular consultations and pap smears by your OB-GYN, vaccines that protect against cancer-causing HPV are also now readily available.

A risk regardless of age
Based on a study of 307 women in Ontario, the incidence of cancer-causing HPV infection is actually highest at the young ages of 15-19.  The World Health Organization Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (WHO-SAGE) on Immunization reiterates the importance of getting young girls protected through HPV immunization before their first exposure to HPV (i.e. before sexual contact), as young as 9 years old.

What about older women? The risk of persistent infection with cancer-causing HPV (which is necessary for cervical cancer to develop) increases with age, and is highest when a woman is over 66 years old.  Thus, screening is recommended starting age 21 to detect cervical abnormalities that precede actual cervical cancer.  Vaccination remains to be recommended for older women to prevent new HPV infections.

Power Over Cervical Cancer
Leading research-based pharmaceutical company GSK continues to ramp up its cervical cancer awareness efforts this year with the patient—the woman—always in mind. In the Philippines, the Power Over Cervical Cancer campaign urges Filipinas to realize that they are empowered—that they can do something to prevent the disease from happening to them, so they don’t miss out on a colorful life ahead or leave their loved ones behind.

Purple lips against cervical cancer
In commemoration of Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, GSK Philippines launched its partnership with cosmetics manufacturer VMV Hypoallergenics at a press event entitled Put On Your Power Pout!, held last May 28th at Makati Shangri-La Hotel. The partnership introduces a twist on spreading awareness: encouraging women to join the movement by wearing purple lipstick to show their support for the advocacy on cervical cancer prevention.

“Cancer is quite a distant concept for women who are well. What might be more important to them is keeping up with the latest trends, especially in fashion and beauty. The lipstick is a woman’s own—when she wears it, she makes a statement about herself. Through this partnership with VMV, we hope to drive women to make a statement against cervical cancer,” says Mark Castillo, GSK product manager.

Jacklyn Remo, assistant marketing manager for VMV Hypoallergenics, supports the movement: “We are fully committed toward this partnership with GSK Philippines. At VMV Hypoallergenics, we promise the safest, most proven effective care on the planet—and that extends to beauty. This unique combination of science, wellness and beauty means we also strongly stand for advocacies that help women, their health and happiness.”

JOIN THE MOVEMENT NOW—take a photo of yourself wearing VMV Hypoallergenics’ Tutu or Chorus Line lipstick (or a photo of you holding your kiss mark from the lipstick) and post it on Instagram and Facebook with the hashtags #PowerPout and #PowerOverCervicalCancer!
