Maintain a Healthy Nerve System with Neurobion

A recent study reveals that 1 out of 3 people may suffer from Neuropathy or nerve damage with progressing age.

A regular person can type 40 words per minute. On a normal day, a person takes 6,200 steps. With every touch, a person can ignite four million sensory receptors. These seemingly common daily activities will not be easy to perform without healthy nerves.

In this day and age, consumer lifestyles have never been more active, and nerves have never been more tested. Throughout the entire day, there’s just simply more to do and busy lifestyles can take a toll on the nerves if people don’t properly nourish them like the rest of their bodies.

The Threat of Nerve Damage
Numbness, tingling and burning sensations, mostly felt in hands and feet, are common signs of nerve damage or a condition called Neuropathy. Contrary to the common belief that only old and mature people experience nerve damage, younger people can also experience and be prone to this condition.
Neuropathy Awareness movement!
Take Neurobion for a Healthy Nerves

Neuropathy can affect people who have an unbalanced diet and unhealthy lifestyle which includes smoking and high alcohol intake, those who have suffered injuries or have diabetes.

“Because the symptoms of Neuropathy are too common, people tend to brush them off completely or associate them with a different condition. However, what we don’t know is that a lot of people are already suffering from Neuropathy and their heath cases remain unreported or undiagnosed. This is what we want to change because we want people to prioritize the health of their nerves the same way that they take care of their other organs,” explains Merck Inc., Philippines Medical Director Dr. Gio Barangan.

Fighting Neuropathy
People can prevent nerve damage as early as they can by maintaining a balanced diet, following an active lifestyle and taking B-Vitamin Complex daily. The roles of vitamins B1, B6 and B12 are important in the health of the nervous system.

and health advocate with Ms. Zsa Zsa Padilla - Neurobion ambassador

Vitamin B1 acts as cofactor for the metabolism of carbohydrates, helping turn starch and sugar into the energy our bodies need, and plays an important role in nerve transmission while Vitamin B6 helps in the production of neurotransmitters, the chemicals that allow brain and nerve cells to communicate with one another. Lastly, Vitamin B12 aids in the production of DNA and RNA, and the production of neurotransmitters.

The World’s #1 B Vitamins*, Neurobion®, recognizes the importance for nerve care. Trusted by doctors for over 40 years, Neurobion® has a balanced formulation of Vitamins B1, B6 and B12 and is clinically proven to nourish the nerves and acts at the root of the problem.

“Neuropathy is a serious condition that needs to be addressed. Taking B Vitamins is a preventive measure which is why we encourage consumers to incorporate it in their daily health regimen. You shouldn’t let nerve damage slow you down or keep you from doing things that you normally do,” says Neurobion® Brand Manager Eloisa Dy Buncio

Neuropathy Awareness Movement
Neurobion® proudly takes on the advocacy of raising awareness on Neuropathy and the role of B Vitamins in overall nerve health. To reach out to a younger market and more people, the brand engaged ambassadors for raising awareness. This includes director and producer Paul Soriano and TV actress, singer and celebrity mom Zsa Zsa Padilla.

“During shoots, days can turn into nights. There are a lot of things going on and I don't always realize how much stress my nerves go through—from texting the crew to reviewing scripts on tablets to helping carrying props and even walking from set to set. I feel numbness and some pain in my hands and feet at times but I don't pay attention because it comes and goes. It's good to be aware of how this can get serious. We shouldn’t neglect our health, even our nerves, which is why I take Neurobion® daily,” shares Soriano.

“As a mom, I am not only focused on my family’s health but also on my own because I want to spend more time with my loved ones. At the same time, I do have work that I need to attend to so I need to manage my time between these two priorities. I don’t want to look back and regret not taking care of my health and my nerves. With my busy schedule, I know I can’t allow myself to slow down so including Neurobion® in my daily habit is the first step towards my health goal,” add Padilla.

Neurobion’s® mission does not stop at providing preventive measure for Neuropathy, but also extends to creating awareness and spreading information on teaching consumers how to detect early symptoms of the condition and how to live a healthy and active lifestyle.

Be healthy with tacos

Did you know that eating tacos is good for health? No, this is not a trick question nor is it another food fad in the making. Strange as it sounds, this traditional Mexican dish is a good source of nutrients. How on earth is that possible?
My husband George while visiting Taco Bell gateway
Before you head to the two Taco Bell branches at the Gateway Mall, Araneta Center in Cubao, Quezon City, be sure to read this article first. It will open your eyes to the magic of tacos and their role in good nutrition.

Nutritionists say a taco can be healthy depending on its shell and the kind of filling it has. For those who live on another planet, a taco is made of corn or wheat tortilla that is folded or rolled around a filling. This thin flatbread can either be soft and flexible or hard and crispy. The latter U-shaped version is the most popular and was first described in a Mexican cookbook in 1949.

Eaten alone, tortillas won’t titillate your taste buds. However, when filled with beef, pork, chicken, seafood, vegetables, and cheese, they become delicious tacos that explode with delightful flavors. The best part is they’re nutritious, too.
I love taco's

If your tacos have tomatoes, onions, and lettuce, expect a great meal filled with vitamins and minerals. From tomatoes and onions, you get vitamin C that can help fight infection and boost immunity. Lettuce adds fiber that aids in digestion and prevents constipation and other digestive problems.

Taco Bell also serve rice meals
Tacos that have beef, pork, shrimp and chicken are packed with protein and provide the energy you need to get going and keep up with an active lifestyle. Protein also helps build muscles. Mix in some cheese and you get another good source of protein as well as calcium.

The New Taco Bell Gateway

The downside is that critics say typical fast food tacos can be bad if they’re loaded with fat and calories. For a healthier option, go for non-fried corn tortillas. Flour tortillas have more calories and frying only makes things worse.

For a filling and more nutritious meal, choose tacos with a lot of vegetables. Cheese and sour cream make a great-tasting taco, but too much is a no-no since they give you a lot of saturated fat and calories. As you can see, tacos can be healthy if they’re made with fresh, nutritious ingredients. Just like any other food, eat them right and you’ll find that tacos can fit into any diet plan.

If you’re hungry for tacos, the best place to be is Taco Bell. Since it opened in 2004, Taco Bell has attracted a lot of faithful followers that hunger for exciting dishes. Owned and operated by Philippine Pizza, Incorporated, Taco Bell is the home of terrific tacos, mouthwatering burritos, tasty quesadillas, cheesy potatoes, nachos, and tempting churros.

Dining at new Taco Bell Gateway is a wonderful experience!

Its first Live Más store in Southeast Asia recently opened in Gateway Mall. Combining hearty Mexican meals and a cool Californian ambiance, the all new Taco Bell will surely delight loyal customers who long for the perfect taco experience that Filipinos have grown to love.

Easy ways to purchase home appliances

Buying small appliances can be a hassle if you don’t know what to do. You’re likely to waste time, money, and energy. Worse, you could get stuck with a bad brand that comes with a limited warranty. To help working moms and professionals make the most of their money, here are some things to consider before you purchase anything. These tips are courtesy of Panvin International Corporation, the local distributor of Samwon, known for quality home and car appliances and accessories:

Find it online
Why endure the heavy traffic, the scorching heat, and long lines at crowded malls when you can shop in style right in the comfort of your own home? That’s what the Internet is here for. Unless you live on the dark side of the moon, shopping is easy thanks to the wired world. Take your pick from different appliances at different places. You’ll easily find what you’re looking for and enjoy online discounts and other promos. Some online merchants like lazada.com.ph also deliver appliances right at your doorstep.
lazada.com.ph

Be aware of promos
Unless you have money to burn, it’s wise to take advantage of discounts and promos that are offered by merchants from time to time. Don’t be shy to ask about items on sale. That expensive TV set you like will probably be on sale next month, so no need to empty your pocket at once. Be patient when shopping and look around for the best bargains. In the world of shopping, patience pays off.

No harm in haggling
Salespeople want you to buy their items, so there’s no harm in haggling if you feel you’re paying too much. You’ll be surprised at their response. Some will offer outright discounts, while others will probably give you fantastic freebies. You’ll get lucky with appliances that will soon be replaced with new models. Make your purchase at slow months when sales aren’t picking up and you could end up with a good brand at a great price. Although having a credit card is convenient, you’re better off paying in cash if you want to pay less. If you don't mind minor scratches, you can also get great bargains on display models.

For quality products at competitive prices, you can’t go wrong with Samwon. Since 1992, Samwon has served Filipino families by providing world-class yet affordable products to fit their modern lifestyle. For more information, visit http://samwon.ph/.

How Samsung helps moms

When it comes to family matters, mothers know best. Nothing can beat moms in their vast experiences and timeless wisdom. This has helped them deal with a variety of situations and has saved the day for most families.

In the Philippines, nothing can beat local moms in their unconditional love and deep concern for the family. They have always been the guiding light, encouraging and pushing each family member to do great things and soar high. These hardworking moms find contentment in a happy family that's successful in life.

Samsung Electronics Philippines Corporation understands how concerned Filipino mothers are when it comes to their families’ welfare. That’s why the company recently staged “Made to Fit: A Musical” at Blue Leaf Events Pavilion in Taguig City to launch the latest digital appliances and show how these can help moms and their families in their quest for happier homes.

”We decided to introduce our products differently and creatively to demonstrate how Samsung Digital Appliances' innovation keeps up with changes in consumer’s life stages, from being independent yuppies, to getting married, and eventually starting a family,” according to Jun Filart, business unit head. "This shows that Samsung appliances are the answer to the ever-evolving needs and diversity of Filipino families."

Aside from the musical, the event featured an experiential area, giving guests the opportunity to take a closer look at the latest Samsung offerings. People witnessed and experienced how and why each appliance can help moms by giving them more ways to care for their families.

A mothers’ unconditional love and hands-on attitude go as far as personally doing the laundry of family members, no matter how tiring this can be. This is their way of ensuring that family members wear clean clothes. To save time and relieve aching backs, there’s a new Samsung Top Load Fully Automatic Washing Machine with ActivDualWash. With its dedicated sink, washboard, and water jet built right into the washer, pre-treating laundry is now more convenient. This can help reduce back pain by 43% when washing.

Moreover, this fully automatic washing machine addresses common laundry problems such as tangling, detergent residues, and lint that may damage clothes. It features Wobble Technology that creates powerful vertical wash motions to prevent clothes from tangling; a Magic Dispenser that uses a propeller to dissolve detergent in the dispenser and spread it evenly; and Magic Filter located at the water level that traps the lint, fluff and particles coming out of clothes during the washing process.

Another challenge moms with big families face is organizing groceries and food items in the refrigerator. These needs are easily answered by a wide range of refrigerator sizes from 6.4 to 28.7 cubic feet. Apart from large storage capacities, Samsung refs are also known for their space-saving designs. The Samsung Food Showcase Refrigerator (FSR), for instance, has a revolutionary "fridge within a fridge” design which features two independent areas, which can offer more space and a wider range of storage and organization options. The first layer, known as the showcase, provides clearly defined zones for frequently used food and ingredients.

Meanwhile, the inner case, which is located deeper inside the refrigerator, provides the perfect place to keep larger and long-lasting items fresher. More than that, the FSR has a metal cooling door that restores the temperature in the fridge faster than a conventional door, maintaining the freshness of food even if the door is frequently opened and closed. With Samsung refrigerators, maximum storage space is achieved while keeping energy consumption and floor space requirements at a minimum Energy Efficiency.

Visit the Samsung Philippines Facebook page (facebook.com/SamsungPH) or follow Samsung via Twitter (twitte.com/samsungph) for more information about these and other appliances. Full details and product images are available at http://www.samsung.com.ph

Conference draws 40,000 nutrition scholars

They are not superheroes, but they are the ticket to well-nourished Filipinos in the barangays all over the country. They are the Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS).

The Barangay Nutrition Scholars Handbook, a guidebook for community nutrition advocates that will help them promote healthy practices and combat malnutrtion full force at the barangay level, was unveiled at the The 3rd National Conference of Barangay Nutrition Scholars for NCR and Southern Luzon at Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria on April 7. The handbook will help the community volunteers in their work in the country's 40,000 barangays. The two-day general assembly of barangay-based health volunteers will be replicated in Vigan (April 15-16), Cebu (April 22-23) and General Santos City (April 28-29). Above, Ms. Jocelyn B. Lumaad, LuzViMin BNS Federation, Inc. President; Maria-Bernardita T. Flores, Assistant Secretary of Health and NNC Executive Director IV; Jovita  Raval, NNC Chief of the Nutrition Information and Education Division , Kate Demetrio, NNC Nutrition Information and Education Division Nutrition Officer II, and Senator Paolo Benigno "Bam" Aquino IV unveil the Handbook.
BNS are the frontliners in providing basic health and nutrition services in the communities.  Once again, almost 4,000 BNSs across the archipelago are set to meet in a biennial national conference hosted by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) of the Department of Health (DOH) in partnership with the LuzViMin BNS Federation, Inc.

The biennial 3rd National Conference of Barangay Nutrition Scholars will have four sub-conferences for the entire month of April. The first event gets off the ground at the Crowne Plaza Galleria Manila in Ortigas Avenue, Quezon City on 7 -8 April for the National Capital Region and Southern Luzon Regions (CALABARZON, MIMAROPA and Bicol).  The Northern Luzon sub-conference (BNSs from Regions 1, 2 and 3 and Cordillera Administrative Region) will convene at the Vigan Convention Center in Vigan City on 15-16 April; the Visayas sub-conference (BNSs from Regions 6, 7 and 8) will gather at Waterfront Cebu City Hotel on 22-23 April; while the Mindanao cluster (BNSs from Regions 9, 10, 11, 12, CARAGA and ARMM) will have their conference at the KCC Convention and Events Center in General Santos City on 28-29 April.

This year’s theme – “BNS: Bigay Todo sa Nutrisyon at Serbisyo!” of the national conference underscores the role of BNSs in the delivery of nutrition and related services to improve the nutritional status of families in the barangays.

Moreover, it aims to continuously update and empower BNSs towards addressing malnutrition and ending hunger; update the BNSs on current nutrition and program developments; and, enhance their skills in improving their performance as BNS. The conference will also serve as a venue for BNSs to convene into a general assembly to discuss various concerns of the national federation.

Topics during the two-day conference include the Updated Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition 2015-2016; the results of the review of the BNS program which will give recommendations for the amendment of PD 1569 or “Strengthening the Barangay Nutrition Program by providing for a Barangay Nutrition Scholar in every barangay” legislated in 1978; the latest nutrition education strategies and tools to promote healthier diets such as the “Pinggang Pinoy”: Healthy Food Plate for Filipino Adults; and the “10 Kumainments”, the Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos (NGF).  A discussion on the plans for the celebration of this year’s Nutrition Month in July is also included to prepare the BNS for this nationwide annual nutrition campaign.

Highlights of the conference include the launching of the BNS Handbook which serves as a guide for BNSs in their performance as BNS.  Likewise, the 2012 and 2013 National Outstanding BNSs will share their good practices that made them win the award to inspire other BNSs to work better and replicate the good practices in their communities.

Notable personalities such as Senators Bam Aquino and Cynthia Villar, and Assistant Secretary of Health and NNC Executive Director Maria-Bernardita Flores will be in the event to give inspirational messages as keynote speakers.

Currently, there are more than 40,000 BNS all over the country. The BNS program is mandated by Presidential Decree No. 1569 and a key strategy of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition. The BNS Program is administered by the National Nutrition Council and implemented by local government units.

My Jolly Creamy Potato Salad

My husband is a meat and potatoes man, so it’s no wonder that he enjoys potatoes in most of his dishes. Nothing pleases him more than a hefty serving of potatoes in chicken curry, lengua, tinola, and other foods. My kids have apparently taken after him because they love potatoes too! Whether it’s French fries or chicken salad, they enjoy it all mainly because it  has generous amount of potatoes.

Come to think of it, they’re not alone in their fascination with potatoes. This crop is an important part of the world’s food supply and follows maize, wheat, and rice in popularity. About 5,000 varieties of potatoes exist worldwide, and 3,000 of these are found in Ecuador, Chile, Peru, Bolivia, and Colombia. Its name comes from the Spanish word patata.

What makes potatoes special? Aside from vitamins and minerals, they contain phytochemicals like carotenoids and natural phenols that are good for the body. However, they are best known for carbohydrates in the form of starch – a part of which reaches the large intestine intact. This is said to have the same health benefits of fiber that protects against colon cancer, lowers blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and reduces the storage of fat.

Knowing this, I made up my own special recipe of potato salad – an old favourite with a twist thanks to Jolly Mayonnaise. Here are the ingredients:

For the dressing
300 ml Jolly Mayonnaise
1 cup thick cream
2 tbsp fresh chopped mint
1 cup grated cheese

For the salad
1 kg Baguio potatoes
2 large apples
1 can pineapple tidbits

Directions
Mix all the dressing ingredients with a little salt and pepper and 2 tbsp water until well blended.

Halve or thickly slice the potatoes if large and boil for 7-8 minutes in a pan of salted water. Cool under the cold tap.

Pile the potatoes into a bowl followed by the apples and pineapples. Pile on top of the salad and drizzle over the dressing.

Cover the bowl with cling film to transport. Toss just before bringing to the table to mix and coat everything in the mayo dressing. You can store this in the fridge afterwards.

Honestly, I doubt if there will be leftovers. Jolly Mayonnaise is a thick, creamy mayo that adds flavour to foods and makes your dining experience better. If you want your mealtimes to be special, be sure to include this in your recipes and get ready for a tasty treat!

A sweet haven for dessert lovers

Being sweet nowadays can sometimes leave a bad taste in the mouth, and sugar critics can’t be blamed for their sour pronouncements. After all, science has shown that carbohydrates in the form of added sugar can be detrimental to health. If you consume too much of the white stuff, you’ll end up with nothing more than empty calories that will make you fat, destroy your teeth, and make you a prime candidate for heart disease and diabetes.
My husband George with blogger friends Arcee Miranda
and Armi Paz Pineda

With this scenario in mind, it was with much fear and trepidation that I visited Love Desserts at the Pearl Drive Commercial Center along Commonwealth Avenue in Fairview, Quezon City. I came half-expecting to see the place partially deserted and littered with some ants that are crazy about sweets. After all, the idea of a dessert buffet doesn't exactly cater to patrons of nutritious and healthy eating.
Can't wait to bite into that goodness!

However, what I found there changed my perception of sugar and showed me just how sweet our people are. For on that fateful day, the place was crawling –not with insects – but with sugar junkies who were lining up to get their fill of fulfilling treats.

It was a sight you’d expect to see only in a dream or perhaps in a fancy restaurant serving exotic dishes. I rubbed my eyes to check if I was dreaming, but the sweet vision remained. People were flocking in droves for a taste of heaven and it was happening right there at Love Desserts. This was the local version of Dessert Storm!
Look the people behind lined-up to be seated

Sweet Galore

Make your own Halo-halo
The long table brimming with all sorts of goodies

Many regulars there probably feel like Hansel and Gretel who were drawn to the house in the forest made of cake and confectionery. Thankfully, there was no witch in sight, just the sweet staff of Love Desserts who were very accommodating and busy helping guests.

Billed as the Philippines’ first and original dessert buffet, this sweet haven for dessert lovers features a wide array of sweets for teeth that are aching for sugary delights. This is the place where you can literally have your cake and eat it too – lots of it!

When I first set foot there, I saw nothing fancy about the place. I’m sure you’ll agree that the restaurant won’t win any special awards for decorations. The décor is simple and functional. The place won’t be mistaken for a convention center either, but the little space the owners have is fully utilized to fit all kinds of sweets lovers – both young and old alike.
Ice cream selection

I made this dessert...

Upon entering Love Desserts, one can’t help but notice the long table brimming with all sorts of tempting goodies. Among its many sweet offerings are cakes of all shapes and sizes, egg pies, cream puffs, cupcakes, brownies, chocolates galore, macaroons, and éclairs. You can also help yourself to mouthfuls of fruit salad, ube, cookies, and many different flavors of ice cream.

Let’s not forget the crepe table where you can have your dream crepe prepared and filled with fruits like blueberries, mangoes, and peaches.  There’s also a halo-halo station where you can whip up your version of this Filipino favorite.

If you think the bill will hurt from that surplus of sugar, think again. A two-hour stay costs a measly P199 which explains why many students frequent the place. The owners don’t mind though if you extend your visit because there’s no business like good business. At this point, Love Desserts truly shines and is a winning example of a sweet solution to hunger.

So, for now, forget about the threat of sugar-related problems, especially since you won’t be living at Love Desserts anyway. Don’t pass up on the place for the occasional treat, especially if you deserve. If you crave for sugar once in a while, there’s no better place to be. Welcome to the sweet life!
