7 Acne Myths that can Make Your Acne Worst

Acne is an extremely prevalent disease, at any given time, 10% of the world population suffers from acne.  Most people will experience acne at least once in their lifetime, typically during adolescence. Those who never suffer from acne are a very fortunate minority. Here are some Myths or acne misconceptions that still believe to this day.

Myth 1:  Acne is a cosmetic, superficial problem, and a rite of passage, it is not a major health concern.

This myth is most damaging of all, the website summarizes the real gravity of the Acne problem like this: “There is no single disease which causes more psychic trauma, more maladjustment between parents and children, more general insecurity and feelings of inferiority and greater sums of psychic suffering than does acne vulgaris.”  A series of studies compiled by conclusively and resoundingly links acne to clinical depression, anxiety, low self esteem, inability to make friends, and even suicidal ideation.  Those who suffer from acne are far more likely to experience these serious psychological and psycho-social conditions than those who do not.  Moreover, as acne increases in severity, so too does the likelihood of negative psychological effects.

Myth 2:  Acne is caused by dirt

Truth:  While dirt can aggravate acne prone skin, it is never the direct cause of acne.  Acne is caused by overactive sebaceous glands, which in turn can be caused by genetics, poor sleeping habits, or hormonal changes.  If you have acne prone skin, keeping clean alone will not significantly lessen acne, on the other hand, if you are genetically blessed with good skin, no matter how unhygienic you are, you will not develop acne.

Myth 3:  Allow pimples to “ripen” before bursting them

Truth:  A pimple isn’t a fruit to be picked, and a large swollen pimple isn’t “ripe” it’s pustular (infected).  By the time a pimple becomes pustular, it has almost always already damaged the collagen of the skin.  This will mean long lasting, deep acne scars that will contribute to prematurely aging skin and be difficult and expensive to treat in the future.  The ideal time to remove visible acne is when it is in the blackhead or whitehead stage, apart from preventing an unsightly pimple, this also prevents long term acne scars.  The removal of whiteheads, and blackheads can only be done properly by trained professionals with the proper equipment.

Myth 4:  Pimples should be left alone to dry up

Truth:  This is a myth you will hear even from sources in developed countries, the truth is though, even this is untrue.  Pimples allowed to become swollen and eventually to just subside most often cause deep acne scars.  The only reason pricking is not a common practice in developed countries is labor costs.  Acne pricking is labor and training intensive, which is why it is only in third world countries such as the Philippines where pricking can be done by a highly skilled professional, earning a decent wage, but for a reasonable price.

Myth 5:  Ripe pimples can be burst at home

This myth arises from the fact that without professional skill or the proper equipment, the only time it is possible to burst a pimple at home is when it is swollen and infected.   Ideally acne should be treated before it reaches the pimple stage, but if it does get to the pimple stage, removing it still requires a professional working in a sterile environment in order to minimize long term damage.

Myth 6:  Acne refers only to severe pimples

Acne is the umbrella term of papules, pustules, blackheads and whiteheads.  A pimple, even a small one is acne in its most advanced stage.  Acne is a disease, like any disease prevention is preferred to cure, but when acne starts to appear, the earlier the intervention, the better.  Acne should be treated in the whitehead and blackhead stage, if any pimples do appear, they need to be addressed within two days to prevent long term acne scars.

Myth 7:  There are those who are simply hopeless cases, those for whom no amount of treatment or medications available today can get their acne under control.

While there is no “quick fix” for severe cases of acne, there is no such thing as a hopeless.  Today’s acne treatments while effective,  still take a while to get acne under control.  Those who seem to be hopeless cases are simply people who try ineffective off-the-shelf remedies or who seek professional treatment but are unable to complete their doctor prescribed treatment regimens, which last typically between 6-18 weeks.

At most clinics, treatment can be painful, and after a typical acne pricking at most clinics, the visible skin trauma can be quite glaring, prompting many acne sufferers to give up on treatment prematurely.

Over the years, SkinTrends has quietly built up its reputation as the acne authority.  SkinTrends owner and head dermatologist Dr. Joy Mongcal recognizes that to this day, there are no machines, or automated treatment modalities that can take the place of an expertly done manual pricking.

Acne treatments at SkinTrends are quite affordable, especially compared to the bigger clinics, but for treating acne, SkinTrends is as good as the best of them, if not even better.  The SkinTrends guarantee is that if patients are not acne free after the recommended number of sessions, a number of succeeding sessions are free, Dr. Mongcal boasts that nobody has ever had to avail of that benefit.  To find out if there is a SkinTrends near you, check out their website:

To add it up. Health Frontiers and More would like to help everyone by giving you guys a Skintrends discount voucher which you can download and redeem in any Skintrends branches near you. This voucher can be printed and use as much as you want but you can be use in a single transaction with-in a day.

How to Add Omega 3 to Your Diet

Adding Omega 3 fatty acids to your diet is a good idea, especially since EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docohexaenoic acid) may be beneficial for your heart, circulation, blood pressure, immune function, and brain development.

Experts say that adults should consume a minimum of 400 milligrams of Omega-3 fatty acids daily. There are several ways to do this. You can rely on fish oil supplements as long as they are made from cold water "oily" fish such as salmon, sardines, mackerel, or herring. Or you can just add fish to your meals regularly. Eating three or more servings of fatty fish every week will ensure that you get the health benefits of Omega-3.
What fish should you eat? What are your choices? Consume plenty of wild Alaskan sockeye salmon, mackerel, sardine, herring, and anchovies. Select those that are low in mercury. You can do this by asking the vendor whether the fish has been tested for toxicity levels.

To eat healthy meals, preparation is key. Baked, broiled or grilled fish is a good choice but fried fish isn’t. The latter is high in fat and calories and deep frying may destroy some Omega-3 levels because of the high cooking temperature.

If you don’t like fish, don’t feel bad. You can still get enough Omega-3 fatty acids by using flaxseed, canola, soya, or walnut oil in your meals. These are all good sources of Omega-3 fats. Preparing a salad of green leafy vegetables with a dressing having any of these oils is one of the simplest ways to increase your Omega-3 intake.

Eat dairy products and meat that comes only from 100 percent grass-fed beef. This has a high Omega-3 ratio.  Adding this kind of beef to your diet is good if you’re not a fish lover.

Find The Doctor With GetMed App

We have all experienced the difficulties of finding a doctor and quickly get an appointment. More importantly, on emergency situations, we might not even have an idea where the nearest hospital is or which doctor to call.

For Arthur John Abarquez, one of the founders of UNA I.T. SOLUTIONS, it was on a Maundy Thursday a few years ago when his wife suffered a serious fall, which resulted to shattered bones in her left forearm and hand that compelled him to recognize this need. “We rushed my wife to the hospital but the ER Doctors couldn’t do anything to relieve her pain. They needed a specialist who, at that time, since it was a holiday, was not available. It took them several hours to locate a doctor who had to travel from Calatagan, Batangas to Manila. It was grueling hours of waiting for my wife and myself. I wanted so much to help her but I was helpless, we were at the mercy of the capabilities and the reaction time of the hospital where we brought her,” he shared.

“Had a medical directory, at the very least, been available then, it would have helped us locate the nearest available doctor, not necessarily from the hospital we brought her to but still within immediate reach,” Arthur added.
From L-R- Arthur John Abarquez, Paolo Castaño and Chris Hatton

UNA I.T. SOLUTIONS, the company behind the Health Lifestyle app called GetMed, envisions the product to revolutionize healthcare in the Philippines.

The company was built in collaboration with some of the country’s profile experts in pharma, information technology, and consumer marketing - all coming together for one direction – to develop a product that would give everybody an upperhand in managing their healthcare, emergency or otherwise.

GetMed simplifies patient experience in just one touch of a button. Just as how we use online tools to book a restaurant or request for a cab service, patients will certainly demand the same experience in self-booking a doctor’s appointment.

“You would not even want to entertain the idea of waiting,” says Paolo Castaño, a reputable pharma and marketing expert, “so GetMed capitalizes on convenience. With the app, you can conveniently book appointments with MDs, find out nearest hospitals or clinics. The app can immediately give you a directory of doctors grouped geographically and according to specialization.” It is also linked to Waze so you get to manage traffic as you proceed with your respective appointments.

Unlike the many medical apps which are limited to information base, GetMed is highly interactive. “The app is not just an information base, but engages the doctors, patients, and helps build a better lifestyle on day-to-day basis,” shares Chris Hatton, an I.T. expert who had professional stints with a leading global software company in Europe & the Middle East and specialized in Government contracts

A free download, GetMed Version 1 is available in Android and IOS version. Initially, Version 1 has over 17,000 registered doctors on the database, covering the majority of the country. It also has over 3,000 Hospitals, Clinics & Barangay Health Centres located in Luzon, Visayas & Mindanao. All listings for both doctors and hospitals are 95% accurate.

“A lot of things are coming for the app,” says Chris, “but we do not want to rush things. Importance of the app right now, with Version 1, is the simplicity and usefulness. We just want to make sure we are doing it the correct manner.”

GetMed is aimed at making the Philippines a major player in the app-business, a product that is made in the Philippines that will make us proud. Its mission is to bring healthcare at the touch of a button, manage your healthcare more efficiently, conveniently and more precise.

“We believe in the project. And Philippines is the right place to launch this kind of product and that’s important. We have such great faith in the Philippines. Great technology skills. We’re very Filipino. We have Filipino staff. We use Filipino developers. We are proud that this is a Filipino-made product. It’s the first time that we are consolidating the data of doctors and patients into one big picture. We’re bringing quality life.”

Choosing a Multivitamin

It’s a fact that you can get all the vitamins and minerals you require as long as you eat different kinds of foods. But taking a pill may help picky eaters or those who don’t eat right. In such a case, a lot of registered dietitians and nutrition experts advise taking a multivitamin supplement daily to make up for poor eating habits.

But with the large number of multivitamins found in the market today, choosing a multivitamin can be confusing. There are many questions to answer. How do you find the right brand? How do you save money? Should you buy a multivitamin with extra calcium and vitamin C or go for so-called special formulas instead?

First, don’t assume that you’re in good hands with expensive brands or multivitamins sold exclusively at health food stores. In truth, you can find good products that don’t cost a fortune at your local drug store. Some generic products are great too. The National Academy of Science’s Institute of Medicine said multivitamins should meet at least 100 percent of the Daily Value for the following: B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B12, B6 (at least 100 milligrams or mg), vitamins C and D, less than 100 mg of vitamin E, and folic acid.

The product should have not more than 15,000 International Units (IUs) of beta-carotene (the vitamin A found in foods) and over 4000 IUs coming from retinol. As far as minerals are concerned, the multivitamin should contain 18 mg of iron and at least 100 mg of magnesium. These basic requirements should be found in the product you select. To check this, just read the label.

Other minerals that are beneficial to health are 0.9 mg of copper, 50 micrograms (mcg) of selenium, and 11 mg of zinc. If you’re worried about calcium, you’ll learn that multivitamins normally have only 200 mg of calcium. Since your body needs 1000 to 1200 mg of calcium daily, get the rest by taking three servings of dairy products everyday. One serving has about 300 mg of calcium and can be found in a cup of milk or yogurt, an ounce of cheese or a cup of calcium-fortified orange juice.

The things you can do without are extra iodine, manganese, molybdenum, chloride, boron, biotin and pantothenic acid since you’ll find them in the foods you eat. There’s also no need to take extra potassium and phosphorous because these are required in small amounts and happen to be in many foods like fruits and vegetables.

3 Steps To Make Your Business Stand Out

You don’t have to jump from a plane or stand on your head so people will notice your business. Neither do you need expensive advertising, a dazzling website or a controversial blog to attract customers. When it comes to marketing your business, simple approaches can make a big difference. Here are some simple marketing strategies to make your business stand out and leave your competitors behind:

BE DIFFERENT - don’t expect to stand out if you’re offering what everyone else is offering. It’s easy to drown in the sea of conformity. Think of something original that people will like and will find only in your store. That way, your customers will keep coming back for more since they can’t get it elsewhere.

“Why is being different important? Being different is important because not everyone does it - not everyone puts ‘be remarkable’ into their business plan. Many people can open a chain store, a coffee shop, or provide web design services that are just the same as hundreds of others out there. What makes you unique is putting in the extra effort and showing the initiative to make yourself different. It is about finding your niche and being best in the world at something, whatever your version of the world may be,” according to SmallBusinessEssentials,Info.

DEVELOP YOUR OWN VOICE - once you have something that makes your business different, find out if you have any competitors and see if you can do something that they don’t. Offer your customers improved service, free delivery or anything that will make them notice your business. These “perks” can go a long way in increasing your customer base and giving your business its own identity.

“When you are an entrepreneur, what usually makes your business different is you. You bring everything you do into the company to make it what it is - your passion, your skills, your talent, your ideas, and your unique spin to a solution for a current problem in the world. I am my company. I even gave the company my initials! I know there is a frequent debate among small business owners working ‘on their company’ vs. ‘in their company’, but I will always be the kind of person who works in my company,” said SmallBusinessEssentials.Info.

GET FEEDBACK - no man is an island, especially if he has his own business. Feedback from customers is important since it tells you what you did wrong, what you did right, and how you can further improve your business. Listen to your customers. They’re the backbone of your business. Without them, you won’t get anywhere. If you want your business to survive, be responsive to your customers’ needs and suggestions.

Protecting Your Heart

After the holiday can literally break your heart because of increased stress, poor eating habits and forgoing healthful activities like going to the gym. These tips can protect your heart from the pain of excessive eating and lack of sleep:

Avoid salty and fatty foods. They sound delicious to many but eating at restaurants can be unhealthy and costly.  To save money, cook at home or go for simple fresh foods. This will give you a healthy weight.

Exercise regularly. If you can’t afford that premium gym membership, that doesn’t mean you have to abandon exercising. Try inexpensive options like walking or swimming at the local pool. By exercising for 30 to 60 minutes a day, you can fight obesity and keep your heart strong and disease free.

Keep in mind that obesity can increase the risk of heart attacks, heart failure and diabetes. All the more reason why you should stick to a healthy diet and a good exercise program.

Get enough sleep. Sleep restores the body to a healthy state that’s why you should get enough of it. While sleeping, our bodies repair the damage that occurs during the day. Although we need eight hours of sleep at night, many people forget to sleep because of work, personal problems or other reasons. Experts say that’s not good for your health.

To sleep better, don’t bring the office to bed with you. Avoid doing stressful things before bedtime like paying bills, worrying about your diminishing retirement fund, or having a bad conversation with your partner or family. These simple measures will keep your heart in good shape.
